About the Author
One of the major theatrical artists of the 20th century, Italy's Dario Fo, togther with Franca Rame, his wife and creative partner, have been creating a theatrical foray uniquely their own for more than fifty years. One of the world's most produced playwrights, Fo was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature. Ron Jenkins holds a doctorate from Harvard and a masters in buffoonery from the Ringling Brothers Clown College. His translations of Dario Fo and Hoshua Sobol have been performed at theatres around the country. He is the author of Dario Fo and Franca Rame: Artful Laughter and is the chair and artistic director of the theatre department at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

Irreverent, Playful and Imaginative Performance Pieces

"Mistero Buffo,"., alternatively titled "The Comic Mysteries," is a wonderful introduction to the irreverent, playful and imaginative world of Dario Fo, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. If "Mistero Buffo" has a shortcoming, it lies in the fact that it is merely a text and does not embody the vitality of Fo's imaginative work, which relies as much on performance as it does on literary content.
"Mistero Buffo" draws on the popular and comic tradition of the medieval mystery plays, as well as the tradition of the so-called "jongleur", or traveling comic and mime, whose performances provided a subversive counterpoint to the authority of Church, Monarchy and Lord. As the jongleur in Fo's piece, "The Birth of the Jongleur," reminds his audience: "I leap and pirouette, and make you laugh. I make fun of those in power, and I show you how puffed up and conceited are the bigshots who go around making wars in which we are the ones who get slaughtered. I reveal them for what they are. I pull out the plug, and . . . pssss . . .they deflate."
Written and originally performed by Fo himself, "Mistero Buffo" consists of a series of pieces involving mime, improvisation and performance art. The texts are fiercely anti-Church, anti-materialist and anti-authority, but they are written with a comic verve and playful sensibility that mark Dario Fo as a remarkably unique writer, director, and performer. Drawing on religious traditions, the pieces include Fo's modern take on Biblical stories entitled "Slaughter of the Innocents," "Marriage at Cana" and "Resurrection of Lazarus," as well as a series of short dialogues (entitled "Passion Plays") where Fo adumbrates the death of Christ as experienced by Mary. All of these pieces border on the blasphemous, subverting conventional pieties and unthinking reverence for established religion and replacing them with a kind of popular re-writing of Christianity, a revision which glorifies the common man at the expense of those in power. Not surprisingly, "Mistero Buffo," like most of Fo's texts and performances, is controversial and provocative. It is also, however, a short text worth reading for an insightful sampling of one of Italy's most remarkable literary and theatrical geniuses.

This is a great book, and its stories of childhood life in a small Central Valley town still resonates strongly today.

This book, along with "The Human Comedy", comprises the essential William Saroyan experience. I would rate this book slightly below "The Human Comedy" in terms of the nature of the stories and the development they undergo -- but in Saroyan-land, even underdevelopment is superior to most other authors. This book is a series of seemingly disconnected short stories involving a small cast of characters, so you can read a chapter, put it down, and not have that feeling of incompleteness that George Lucas always left you with at the end of each Star Wars movie. Just one of the stories was worth the cost of the book -- the teflon cousin who breezes through life in the classroom with the blame for all of his sins somehow falling onto those nearby. No, he doesn't get his comeuppance, but the accusers (a classroom teacher and a principal) somehow get theirs, and in an completely unexpected and humorous way.

I am a high school student, and we read an excerpt from this book in our literature class. I immediately was intrigued by Saroyan's method of writing and the fact that his novels are autobiographical. This is a story of Aram Garoghlanian, a boy living in Fresno with his large family of Armenian immigrants. Throughout the book, such ideas are touched upon as maturity, honesty, and acceptance. My Name is Aram is a portrait not only of Aram Garoghlanian and William Saroyan himself, but Americans in general. Americans struggle with basic values and ideas everyday, and accepting our eccentric family members is something we learn to do. Saroyan describes small details in hi writing that bring the story to life and open up a new world. Readers will soon realize when they open this novel that each of us holds Aram inside us, whether it means we struggle with the idea of stealing a horse or keeping the families reputation. I strongly recommend this book to anyone.

The book is composed of different events that happened in the author's life. It is the life of an Armenian immigrant family in the beautiful San Juaquin Valley. Although, the story is about events that are happening in a particular Armenian family, in reality it is the life all immigrants in America. The stories some how effects all Americans. For those who can't get enough of Wright, particularly the extraordinary period of stunning invention known as the Prairie House period which came to a close in 1911, this is a must have book. Large format with exceptionally good photographs. It is in my mind the best of the best. It is even better when combined with a book that features drawings (which this one lacks). The best would be The Studies and Executed Buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright (the actual title is in German) more commonly known as the Wasmuth Edition, with the original drawings by Wright. It is all drawings, no photographs.
One might be tempted to call this a coffee table book which is partly true. It is not a scholarly work and makes little attempt to explain or provide in depth understanding of the work. But oh is it beautiful!

Unworthy sequel

In the wake of the magnificent "Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses", this followup volume disappoints on several levels. I expected some duplication with the earlier book. Certainly, extended coverage of the iconic works such as Dana, Robie and Coonley was warranted. As pointed out in my review of the previous book, many houses received coverage only via a thumbnail photo appendix. I anticipated these works would receive expanded coverage here, for the most part I was wrong. What we get instead is much duplication with "FLW:The Houses": of the 22 houses presented here 15 were in the previous volume. There is also reuse of many of the same photos, sometimes cropped slightly differently sometimes identical. Also disappointing is the size of the new volume. It is quite a bit smaller in format with the resultant lessening of impact by the still great photos.
To sum up, if I had to buy only one book it would be "FLW: The Houses". This holds true even if my major interest was the Prairie period alone. Will a followup Usonian era volume provide the same needless duplication?

Make sure to go over page 183!

Read it front to back, and managed to pass the exam on the first try. A very large portion of the test is based on Compensations, Muscle Imbalances, and Corrective Strategies, so make sure that you completely understand page 183. Another tip would be to not spend time memorizing, but instead work to understand the concepts. Very well written textbook, by a reputable company.

Essential for aspiring Personal Trainers

The NASM: CPT course at this present time is arguably the best overall personal trainer program out there.

I just received my book a few days ago, and I'm aspiring to be a personal trainer after years of lifting myself.
I must say I thought I knew a lot before, but my knowledge doesn't even scratch the surface of what is expected of you by the NASM team.
PHENOMENAL book split up into 4 major sections:

+Fundamentals of Human Movement science
+Assessments, Training Concepts, and Program Design
+Nutrition and Supplementation
+Client Interaction and Professional Development

It's a 623 page book (including appendix) and is truly great even for just expanding your knowledge of training alone.

I can't wait to get started, I'm hoping to hit it hard and get it done during my winter break and I'll make an update once I get there.

(Doesn't hurt to mention also that buying the book on amazon is your best bet if you're unsure like me about becoming a personal trainer. If you buy it from NASM they force bundle it with the exam right away which you have to take 180 days after purchase [or upon receiving it, one of the two]. Also the book came in excellent and crisp condition so no worries there!)

Overall: The potential for this book is excellent, can't wait to get started and I will update my progress most likely Mid-January.

Need this for a class, it's a good book. Good information, i'd definitely recommend if you're getting into personal training, and obviously if you're needing to pass the NASM exam.

Absolutely not worth the price

It's not worth the price. Not even half. The book is made like a used newspaper with a hard cover around it. I'm sure there are millions of books about that theme made nicer and cheaper.
