In a welcome effort to convince lawyers to streamline their legalese and improve the comprehensibility of their writing, attorney Faulk and Mehler, who has taught at the University of Denver School of Law, have compiled essentially a grammar and stylebook for the legal profession. The thorough table of contents lists the rules of clear writing, diction, tone, grammar, syntax, punctuation, capitalization, paragraph construction, organization, and format. Drawn mostly from actual legal writing, the examples illustrating these principles point out anachronistic lawyerisms and suggest better alternatives. Otherwise, this book would seem somewhat redundant since so many similar handbooks already exist, such as Strunk and White's classic Elements of Style. A glossary of grammatical terms and a bibliography of books and articles on legal writing conclude the text. A possible candidate for law libraries and law offices.

Legal writing never goes out of style

It seems we all have to learn to read legal documents to some extent even if we can afford an attorney. After all, it's everywhere: case citations, endless references to precedent, citations to authoritative sources and a host of formalities to follow.
I found a way to learn to read legal documents - by learning the basics of legal writing. It's a direct path. Because of this book I easily recognize predictive analysis, persuasive analysis, legal drafts and academic legal writing. This has helped me navigate legalese, the standard abstruseness writing style. This is the basis for cell phone contracts and many other real-life situations where it's not necessary to call an attorney.
In summary, I got this book just to educate myself a little regarding legal documents. It helped me gain confidence in doing things we all have to do.
