C.R.Hallpike is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at McMaster University, Canada, and an Oxford D.Litt, and spent a lifetime's research living with mountain tribes in Ethiopia and Papua New Guinea and writing many books about them and on morality, religion, culture and social evolution. a very clear, readable account of one of the most important and poorly argued questions of philosophy

This book is a tremendous overview and discussion of one of the most important philosophical questions there are. It covers not only philosophy, but history, religion, anthropology, and biology in a broad-ranging discussion of the various aspects of the question. I learned a lot by reading it.
I've always believed that morality, the Good, is a real thing that is separate from God. In other words, I've never cared much for the position that "God's will" and "the Good" are one and the same thing. There is a logical reason for this. If God's will and the Good are one and the same, then you can't really explain why someone should follow God's will. Let me explain.
When you say that someone "ought to" do something, you are saying that it would be good for them to do that. So in any statement like "You ought to obey the law", you can define what the sentence means by replacing "you ought to" with "it would be good for you to", hence: "It would be good for you to obey the law."
Now if doing good is exactly the same thing as doing God's will, then you can also replace "it would be good for you to" with "it is God's will for you to". So ultimately, "You ought to obey the law" reduces to, that is, means the same as "It is God's will for you to obey the law."
So what's the problem with that? Consider the proposition, "You ought to do God's will." I think this is a true proposition, but by the argument I just made, it just means, "It is God's will for you to do God's will". The notion of right and wrong has disappeared from the sentence. It is now just a comment that God's will is for God's will to be done. It is a sort of recurrence or closure statement about God's will, and not about what someone ought to do. The "oughtness" has vanished from the sentence.
So if morality and God's will are two different things, then it should be possible to give an account of morality that does not refer to God's will, right? It doesn't have to be a fully persuasive argument, or even really define what morality is, but there should be some account by which moral responsibility or "oughtness" can exist without God. But everything I've ever read that attempts to do this has been an utter failure. Still, my general position on this led me to think that these atheists just were not very good at philosophy, that there must be some good way to justify good without God--they just didn't know how to do it.
That is why I bought this book. I was hoping to get a better answer to this riddle. And having read the book, I think I have my answer. I now know why I have never seen a decent account of morality without God. I won't give the answer in this review; you will have to read the book.

Quite a nice takedown of supposedly scientific secularism

Hallpike delivers here an intellectually rigorous work that shows how common atheist strains of thought such as the meaninglessness of the universe and the denial of free will do not justify any of western atheists' professed liberal beliefs, even when such beliefs are otherwise worthy. It is sure to make one think hard about the implications of godlessness.
