About the Author
In addition to conducting the research that culminated in his acclaimed theories of relativity, Albert Einstein (1879-1955) taught and lectured at universities around the world. Einstein received numerous awards and honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine, and philosophy, and he remains a towering symbol of intellectual and imaginative achievement.

It's All Relative
Around 1950, Hayward Cirker, Founder and President of Dover Publications, wrote to Einstein and asked his approval to proceed with a Dover paperback reprint of the 1923 collection of original papers on relativity by Einstein himself and others (H. A. Lorentz, H. Weyl, and H. Minkowski), which had originally been published in England. Einstein was reluctant, wondering how much interest there could possibly be in this relic of his work from 30 or more years earlier. Cirker persisted, and Einstein finally agreed — the Dover edition of The Theory of Relativity has been in print ever since and has been followed by many other Dover books on relativity.

The papers reprinted in this original collection will always be for the serious student the cornerstone of their Einstein library: Michelson's Interference Experiment (H. A. Lorentz); Electromagnetic Phenomena in a System Moving with any Velocity Less Than That of Light (H.A. Lorentz); On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies (A. Einstein) found on pages 109–164 of this text; Hamilton's Principle and The General Theory of Relativity (A. Einstein); Cosmological Considerations on the General Theory of Relativity (A. Einstein); Do Gravitational Fields Play an Essential Part in the Structure of the Elementary Particles of Matter? (A. Einstein); and Gravitation and Electricity (H. Weyl).

Einstein Signs

I chose to purchase this book because I kept getting signs leading to Einstein through other books and even on the tv. So I thought that I had better investigate Albert Einstein. I believe that what Einstein did and felt was true to his soul and beyond our mere planet earth. That is not to say whether he was correct or incorrect 100% of the time, but who was or is? I think if you are a soul searching spiritualist that Einstein's words and stories should at least be taken a look at for the sake of wonderment. I am adding other Einstein related books to my shelf. I think he had a lot to share and we are fortunate that it is available to do so. Yes, I would read this again.

Don't Waste Your Money

One gets the sense that the editor wanted to make some money by focusing on Einstein's thoughts about cosmic religion, but then, even on that limited topic, misleads the reader by substantially shortening what he said. If you want a fuller understanding of what Einstein thought of a variety of topics, and specifically a more complete and accurate version of what he said about cosmic religion, read "Ideas and Opinions." This "book" took less than 10 minutes to read and took away rather than added to what had already been given to us on that subject.

A MARVELOUS TITLE ESSAY, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHERS

This 1931 publication contains a biographical essay by the publishers; an "appreciation" by George Bernard Shaw; Einstein's fairly brief "Cosmic Religion" essay; and then other brief essays on "Militant Pacifism," "Disarmament," "The Jewish Homeland," "On Radio," "On Science," etc.

In the title essay, he wrote, "there is found a third level of religious experience... I will call it the cosmic religious sense. This... does not involve an anthropomorphic idea of God; the individual feels the vanity of human desires and aims, and the nobility and marvelous order which are revealed in nature and in the world of thought. He feels the individual destiny as an imprisonment and seeks to experience the totality of existence as a unity full of significance." (Pg. 48)

He adds, "The religious genuises of all times have been distinguished by this cosmic religious sense, which recognizes neither dogmas nor God made in man's image. Consequently there cannot be a church whose chief doctrines are based on the cosmic religious experience... How can this cosmic religious experience be communicated from man to man, if it cannot lead to a definite conception of God or to a theology? It seems to me that the most important function of art and of science is to arouse and keep alive this feeling in those who are receptive." (Pg. 49-50)

He adds, "I assert that the cosmic religious experience is the strongest and the noblest driving force behind scientific research. No one who does not appreciate ... the devotion without which pioneer creations in scientific thought cannot come into being, can judge the strength of the feeling out of which alone such work, turned away as it is from immediate practical life, can grow." (Pg. 52)

Einstein's views on religion are much misunderstood, but are (to me, at least) extremely profound and moving. The displacement of millions of German civilians mostly took place after World War II. By 1945, the U.S., United Kingdom, and the former Soviet Union had finalized the Potsdam Conference, in which the border demarcations of post-war Europe were re-drawn. Germany ceded nearly 30% of its official territory, leaving huge ethnic German minorities as new citizens of Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Poland. The former Soviet Union and the newly independent Eastern European communist nations now included large German populations that had lived there for centuries (and in the Baltic for over 800 years.) Considering these civilian populations "dangerous" regardless of their diverse political ideologies, the governments of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and the former Soviet Union forced the near entirety of the German civilian populations out of their homes to be forced marched as refugees into labor camps or to a Germany that their ancestors hadn't seen for centuries.

The "legal" expulsions of the Potsdam Conference followed millions displaced and hundreds of thousands dead in the so called "wild expulsions" of 1944 and 1945. At the same time, Soviet Order #7161 planned to deport all physically-able men and women from German minorities to the former Soviet Union for forced labor. Almost all of the 1,084,828 German settlers in the former Soviet Union alone were forcibly shipped on trains to Siberia and Kazakhstan, with thousands starving to death in transit. In total, as many as 2,000,000 refugees may have died due to hypothermia, starvation, diseases, and internecine violence. Many were proscribed with legal discrimination by being forced to wear white armbands to expedite their deportation and exclusion. The Allied and former Soviet Union deportation programs supplemented the previous displacement of nearly 500,000 ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe under diplomatic negotiations orchestrated by Hitler himself in negotiation with former Soviet Union leader Stalin in the Non-Aggression Pact of 1939 as part of Hitler's "come home to the Reich" doctrine. The expulsion and displacement of German civilians ultimately became arguably one of the largest forced migrations of the 20th Century that is still lacking in public and scholarly memory.

Lowe skillfully argues in SAVAGE CONTINENT: EUROPE IN THE AFTERMATH OF WORLD WAR II that the months following May, 1945 brought no peace to the scattered skeleton of the Third Reich, with these expelled German minorities suffering even worse than the destruction wrought by the war. The horrific crimes mentioned in this book weren't haphazard or spontaneous. Rather, this mass "ethnic cleansing" of German civilians was official Allied policy. For far too long, the victims of this relatively unknown holocaust have remained largely forgotten and unmourned. Lowe's well-written and timely book hopefully will change this.

And for science to thrive, the university, its home, had to be the embodiment of the cardinal virtue of this society: the virtue of civility.

In the spirit of Ben-David, believing that scholarly debate advances common good, and rational discourse wins whichever way arguments in it are settled, this festschrift debates such core issues as the nature of science, its changing definition and position in Western society, the forms of organization optimal for scientific creativity, and the ability of the research university to foster scientific growth, while also performing its educational role.

About the Author
With Bachelor and Doctorate degrees in Chemical Engineering, Alan Wilson began his career in asset maintenance at Guinness, where he was responsible for managing the maintenance and project activities of over 200 in-house and contract trades people. He went on to manage the design, procurement, and building of new installations in Nigeria and the Cameroons. Wilson also worked as chief engineer for a large independent consulting firm, where he established and headed the maintenance management accounts with the Royal Navy, Kodak, British Nuclear Fuels, and British Petroleum and British Airways. Subsequently, he consulted for over 40 companies, including Ford, Shell, Amerada Hess, Anheuser Busch, Conoco, and Chevron and then launched his own consulting business, carrying out both project management and maintenance assignments. He has directed the design and construction of major new operations in Colombia and Hong Kong and assisted in the start-up of companies in the UK. Additionally he actively consults in auditing and benchmarking, strategy development, and the application of e-collaborative systems in asset maintenance. As a well-respected professional, Wilson is an advisor to many asset maintenance conferences and is a presenter at numerous seminars.

Hit and miss

Ever wondered what a book would look like if it was written chapter by chapter by some of the best authors in the field? Well, buy this book and you will know. The structure of the book is very good and covers a lot of ground. Many of the chapters (in fact most of them) are also very good, this is not just a high level and superficial treatment.
The problem (and I think it is a significant problem) is that all the authors have different styles of writing and slightly different emphasis when addressing issues. The result is a book that has a lot of information, but isn't really the guide it claims to be - the flow is insufficient to guide the reader through a process.
The book is good, it just isn't great which is a pity as the need is there.

Excellent Reference for Everyone

This book is complete, detailed, structured & full of good information that is easy to follow. It is the best book that I have bought on the subject of maintenance management to date, and is now one of the few constant companion books that travel with me. I would recommend Asset Maintenance Management to anyone in any field of maintenance management. At least one of the articles has a definite electrical diagnostic slant for our electrical bretheren.

My only criticisms would be that the spell checker wasn't functioning particularly efficiently at the time of editing, and I've noted that at least two of the graphics have been partially cut off at the base. Finally, this book is based entirely around fixed processing plant, and as yet have no seen no applications of the information to mobile plant.

In closing, maintenance principles, philosophies, strategies & tactics are roundly universal and this book is a "must-buy" for anyone of any maintenance persuasion seeking to continue down the road of Continuous Improvement.
