Asher's enjoyable if violent SF novel pits heavily augmented posthumans and the AIs who rule them, the Polity Collective, against the Prador, vicious, bug-eyed aliens out to conquer all human space. The Polity Collective, an eminently civilized society, despite a small separatist underground that resents the AI's benign rule, stands in contrast to the crablike Prador, who rule by brute force. Since the Prador have a technological advantage in space warfare, two human beings—the super-soldier Jebel Krong and Moria Salem, a technician with an illicit brain augmentation—must combine their talents to try to destroy the impregnable Prador warship threatening humanity. The Polity novels (Gridlink, etc.) lack the intellectual complexity of the best British space opera by such writers as Iain M. Banks, Ken MacLeod and Justina Robson, but if you don't mind the gross out (the Prador eat not only their young but also their human enemies), they're invariably a good read. (July)

The Polity, a space-faring civilization ruled mostly by AIs because only they can cope with the math for the runcible operation enabling interstellar travel, has just made first contact. No one knew quite what to expect of the crablike Prador's visit to Avalon Station, though the massacre that ensued wasn't on anybody's list. Seems the bloodthirsty Prador are bent on taking over the Polity and its runcible technology, and the Polity powers that be must scrambled to get to have any chance of defeating them. Jebel Krong, a soldier on Avalon when the aliens arrived, and runcible tech Moria Salem, recently cerebrally augmented to handle the technology, are thrown together in a classic space-opera scenario in which two wild cards are the private surgeon who installed Moria's aug--a fugitive--and the aug itself, which is more than ordinary. The Prador invasion and Polity politics are revealed as horribly intertwined, but Moria and Jebel might end the war with a particularly bold plan. A fast and furious spectacle developed with gusto. About the Author
Neal Asher is a science fiction writer whose work has been nominated for both the Philip K. Dick and the British Fantasy Society awards. He has published more than fifteen books, many set within his “Polity” universe, including Gridlinked, The Skinner, and Dark Intelligence. He divides his time between Essex and a home in Crete.

Currently the First in the Polity Universe Series

Even though Neal Asher wrote "Prador Moon" (2006) after he'd written several other book in his "Polity Universe" series (started in 2001), it's currently the first novel in the overall series by internal chronological order. It, essentially, gives the story of first contact between the Polity and the Prador. It's a well-written, action-packed, science fiction book with an excellent universe and decent characterizations. My only real issue with it is that the point-of-view changes a lot. Instead of changing POV at chapter breaks, Asher does so repeatedly at section breaks within chapters. That leads to a bit of confusion if you miss the section break and gives the story a bit of a choppy feel. Also, be aware that even though this book has an emotionally satisfying ending, it doesn't tie everything up. It can't. There are another 13 books in the series that continue the Polity/Prador relationship. It's not a bad thing. It's just something to keep in mind.

I'm rating the book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

Excellent Story!

I'm a longtime fan of Ashers work and this book didn't disappoint. His Polity novels contain intricate, richly imagined world's with lots of intrigue, action, and suspense. This NOT pulp science fiction and well worth reading.

Beautiful - warning some spoiler alert

This book definitely made me emotional. Poor Evie. I felt all her pain. It broke my heart to have read what she went through for 10 years. Pining after someone whom probably doesn't even feel the same back. Sigh.

Any who, I loved Evie. She was true to her character. She was loving, caring and had the biggest heart. She always put everyone before herself. But that was also probably her downfall. Letting everyone take advantage of her. My heart broke for this girl. I'm so glad she got her happy ever after. I'm really surprised to see a lot of reviews talk about how her HEA wasn't what they expected. It's exactly what I wanted and expected. She deserved it. I'm glad she realized she could do better. That there's more in life and she deserved better than the bare minimum.

Devon - this man infuriated me to no end. He was wishy washy. I did not like him one bit. He did not deserve Evie at all. In all honesty, I can say he did not feel the same way Evie did and I'm glad she saw that in the end. She always put him first but she was always his second choice. Even after he tried to put moves on her, she was still his back up choice. I'm really glad the story took a different turn and Evie ended up with the right guy.

Nate - I wish we got to see more of him. He was perfect. Patient, loving, sexy!!!! I wanted more from him. I'm glad he came around. He's exactly what our heroine needed. I'm glad that for once the nice guy did not finish last.

Many times we read books about men whom does all the wrong in the book to the heroine and she still accepts him in the end. I am glad for once that the story went the other way because sometimes the heroine deserves so much more the a-hole she gave her heart to whom can't see her for what she is worth. I really liked that about this story. A young woman coming to terms that she needs to value her self more and put her self first sometimes. Learning her worth and knowing that sometimes, it's better to move on then hold onto to something that may not be. Some people don't deserve a second chance. Some do. I'm glad that in this book, the right person got the second chance, not the one whom always had it but always kept it as a second option, a back up.

Kudos to the author for writing a beautiful book about not only learning to love others, but yourself as well.

It's either brilliant or terribly disappointing.

There is no doubt this book is beautifully written. Your heart aches for the people who loved her and you empathize with the void Olivia leaves in their lives. Perhaps my luke warm reaction is the book doesn't end the way I wanted it to. Always a hopeless romantic, I wanted a different HEA. I realize this book was more than just a romance and was also about the struggle for this woman to find herself. I just wish that when she succeeded, the HEA was different. But, perhaps that's the brilliance of the book.

Stunning, Raw, and Beautifully Real!

Anie Michaels has absolutely stunned me with The Absence of Olivia. This is definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year and it has claimed its spot on my list of all-time favorite reads. Evelyn’s story is truly something special. The Absence of Olivia was honest, at times brutally so. Overflowing with emotion, this novel captures so many of life’s experiences in its pages. Anie Michaels’ words breathe life, death, longing, healing, loss, and love into a story that is utterly beautiful and positively unexpected. Through Evelyn and Devon, this book captures love in its most raw form, depicting the imperfections, devastation, and uncertainty that shapes our view on love and defines all of our relationships. I connected with this story immediately, feeling every word as I read it, becoming invested in the characters, and riding the ups and down of this journey. The Absence of Olivia is not a fairytale by any means, its reality and that makes this love story that much sweeter.

Evelyn’s character growth was the best part of this book. The way in which Anie Michaels took her through the stages of grief and forced her to confront her long-held feelings for Devon was heart wrenching. Her emotional turmoil was overwhelming, hitting to the core of me in a way that allowed all of Evelyn’s feelings to move through me as I followed her journey. I related to Evelyn in a significant way, understanding her desperate need to keep her word to Olivia no matter the cost to her own happiness. There were moments where the character wavered, caught up in her grief or confused by the evolution of her relationships with others. These moments of weakness and instances of doubt made Evelyn that much more tangible and gave me a better appreciation for her strength and the entirety of her journey. A fighter in her own right, this inimitable character proved to be simply breathtaking and absolutely unforgettable.

The Absence of Olivia was perfectly constructed, providing alternating flashback chapters that divulged the true nature of the relationships between Olivia, Devon, and Evelyn. Anie Michaels delivers key moments in their lives together that serve as the foundation for current emotions, making this story strong and the readers’ understanding of the characters even stronger. The Absence of Olivia is a rollercoaster from start to finish. My heart ached for Devon and broke for Evelyn. I laughed at Ruby’s sass and swooned over Nate’s enduring patience and understanding. I sobbed, taking the ugly cry to a whole new level as my heart shattered and swelled at the moments of significant emotional impact. Anie Michaels has completely blown me away with her exquisite imagery and poignant prose, bringing this story to life in the way that only she can. The Absence of Olivia is unexpected, real, and deeply stunning. This one-of-a-kind story is an absolute must read!

About the Author
Allan Ornstein (Ph.D., New York University) is Professor of Education at St. John's University in New York. He is the author of more than 55 texts and 400 articles and research papers, and has served as a consultant for more than 60 government and educational agencies. He is a co-author of FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION, now in its twelfth edition (Wadsworth Cengage Learning).

Daniel Levine is a former Professor of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and before that at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Dr. Levine has authored numerous journal articles and papers on urban education, school reform, and related topics.

Gerald L. Gutek is the former dean of the School of Education at Loyola University in Chicago. He updates "Part Two: Historical and Philosophical Foundations" in this edition of FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION.

David Vocke is a Professor of Secondary Education in the College of Education at Towson University in Maryland. He updates chapters 2, 7, 8, 13, and 14 in this edition of FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION.

An acolyte of and assistant to diction dictator William Safire, McQuain emulates his mentor and smites words weary and words worthless--in other words, he euthanatizes the terminologically inexact. Attacking the ilk of human resources and downsize, McQuain's crusade for clarity imperils the obfuscating euphemism or grammar gone gonzo. But like the knights of medieval Christendom, won't his conquests of style prove ephemeral, mirages of success that dissipate in the heat of modernity's syntactic incoherence? To such a trespass of logorrhea as above, McQuain echoes Thoreau's wisdom: "Simplify, simplify." To operationalize that (which McQuain might twice ticket for use of a vague verb and the "suffocating suffix," -ize), the author deploys the tools--direct, concrete meanings--followed by examples of the result: more powerful language. His diction is as muscular as his advice. Sometimes less is more: POWER LANGUAGE aims for accuracy, honesty, impact, logic and strength. Familiarly short simple words in a short simple style start it up. Varied sentence lengths keep it going, with the shorter sentences making the most important information stand out; with a topic sentence, its support and conclusion making up a tightly powerful paragraph; and with the two strongest sentence positions for the most meaningful points being the first and last words. Too many opinions and statistics get in the way: speaking or writing, think of the listener or reader first; and make everything powerfully clear, simple and straightforward. Jeffrey McQuain's tightly woven style and text set business and other writing on course: his book has the answers to Jefferson D. Bates's WRITING WITH PRECISION, Peter Elbow's WRITING WITH POWER, Paul A. Eschholz's LANGUAGE AWARENESS, and Marcia Lerner's WRITING SMART.

Have to give this five stars even if it is short...Damon is so damned hot and dirty...and Pete well he just loves what his neighbour Damon does to him after spying on him for so long....If you want a hot dirty read you can't beat this..New author for me but i shall be watching closely for more x

Tantalus delivers a tantalizing short.

This little story from newcomer Tantalus delivers exactly what it promises. Short and sweet it isn't. It's short and sexy, short and steamy, short and sensuous, short and stimulating. For only 99 cents, it's a cheap thrill.
Pete had been watching Damon since he moved in next door, but neither of them expected to find out about each other what they did when Pete lost a bet to Damon. His prize was that he got to do anything he wanted to Pete.
There's not really a story, it's more of an interlude. The interlude is so hot, I didn't need the story. Sometimes you just want to read something quick, and Summer Heat is that. Here are a few key phrases and words to give you an idea of exactly what Tantalus has in store for you: pain and pleasure, bruising kisses, thick with muscle, I'd watched him, feel the sting, smell the power.
I'll bet you got a little turned-on just reading those. This is a must read, just don't read it in a crowded room or you'll have a lot of squirming to explain.

About the Author
Ian Tregillis is the son of a bearded mountebank and a discredited tarot card reader. He was born and raised in Minnesota, where his parents had landed after fleeing the wrath of a Flemish prince. (The full story, he's told, involves a Dutch tramp steamer and a stolen horse.) Nowadays he lives in New Mexico, where he consorts with writers, scientists and other unsavoury types.
