About the Author
Allan Ornstein (Ph.D., New York University) is Professor of Education at St. John's University in New York. He is the author of more than 55 texts and 400 articles and research papers, and has served as a consultant for more than 60 government and educational agencies. He is a co-author of FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION, now in its twelfth edition (Wadsworth Cengage Learning).

Daniel Levine is a former Professor of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and before that at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Dr. Levine has authored numerous journal articles and papers on urban education, school reform, and related topics.

Gerald L. Gutek is the former dean of the School of Education at Loyola University in Chicago. He updates "Part Two: Historical and Philosophical Foundations" in this edition of FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION.

David Vocke is a Professor of Secondary Education in the College of Education at Towson University in Maryland. He updates chapters 2, 7, 8, 13, and 14 in this edition of FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION.

An acolyte of and assistant to diction dictator William Safire, McQuain emulates his mentor and smites words weary and words worthless--in other words, he euthanatizes the terminologically inexact. Attacking the ilk of human resources and downsize, McQuain's crusade for clarity imperils the obfuscating euphemism or grammar gone gonzo. But like the knights of medieval Christendom, won't his conquests of style prove ephemeral, mirages of success that dissipate in the heat of modernity's syntactic incoherence? To such a trespass of logorrhea as above, McQuain echoes Thoreau's wisdom: "Simplify, simplify." To operationalize that (which McQuain might twice ticket for use of a vague verb and the "suffocating suffix," -ize), the author deploys the tools--direct, concrete meanings--followed by examples of the result: more powerful language. His diction is as muscular as his advice. Not only copy editors should plug in; any who lean on old nags like ya know or on new uselessisms like outsourcing will be able to make themselves perfectly clear. Gilbert Taylor

Sometimes less is more: POWER LANGUAGE aims for accuracy, honesty, impact, logic and strength. Familiarly short simple words in a short simple style start it up. Varied sentence lengths keep it going, with the shorter sentences making the most important information stand out; with a topic sentence, its support and conclusion making up a tightly powerful paragraph; and with the two strongest sentence positions for the most meaningful points being the first and last words. Too many opinions and statistics get in the way: speaking or writing, think of the listener or reader first; and make everything powerfully clear, simple and straightforward. Jeffrey McQuain's tightly woven style and text set business and other writing on course: his book has the answers to Jefferson D. Bates's WRITING WITH PRECISION, Peter Elbow's WRITING WITH POWER, Paul A. Eschholz's LANGUAGE AWARENESS, and Marcia Lerner's WRITING SMART.

Have to give this five stars even if it is short...Damon is so damned hot and dirty...and Pete well he just loves what his neighbour Damon does to him after spying on him for so long....If you want a hot dirty read you can't beat this..New author for me but i shall be watching closely for more x

Tantalus delivers a tantalizing short.

This little story from newcomer Tantalus delivers exactly what it promises. Short and sweet it isn't. It's short and sexy, short and steamy, short and sensuous, short and stimulating. For only 99 cents, it's a cheap thrill.
Pete had been watching Damon since he moved in next door, but neither of them expected to find out about each other what they did when Pete lost a bet to Damon. His prize was that he got to do anything he wanted to Pete.
There's not really a story, it's more of an interlude. The interlude is so hot, I didn't need the story. Sometimes you just want to read something quick, and Summer Heat is that. Here are a few key phrases and words to give you an idea of exactly what Tantalus has in store for you: pain and pleasure, bruising kisses, thick with muscle, I'd watched him, feel the sting, smell the power.
I'll bet you got a little turned-on just reading those. This is a must read, just don't read it in a crowded room or you'll have a lot of squirming to explain.

As if it were not enough for the mountain to come to Mohammed, those sons of the desert who came to Provo found themselves taking a required class in the Book of Mormon from the compiler of this manual. Naturally he was more than curious to see how these young men would react to the Book of Mormon treatment of desert themes, and invited and even required them to report frankly on their impressions. To date, with only one exception, no fault has been found with Nephi on technical grounds. The one exception deserves the attention of all would-be critics of the Book of Mormon.

It was in the first class ever held in "Book of Mormon for Near Eastern Students," and the semester had barely begun when of course we ran smack into the story of how Nephi found Laban dead drunk in a dark alley and cut off his head - a grisly tale that upsets Nephi himself in telling it. As we rehearsed the somber episode, I could detect visible signs of annoyance among the Arab students - whispered remarks, head-shakings, and frowns of dissent. Finally, toward the end of the hour, a smart young man from Jordan could hold out no longer. "Mr. Nibley," he said, plainly speaking for the others, "there is one thing wrong here. It doesn't sound right. Why did this Nephi wait so long to cut off Laban's head?" Since I had been expecting the routine protests of shock and disgust with which Western critics react to the Laban story, I was stunned by this surprise attack - stunned with a new insight into the Book of Mormon as a message from another age and another culture.

A Masterpiece of Impeccable Scholarship

This powerfully insightful book was, and is, so enlightening that Joseph Fielding Smith (10th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) himself said that it ought to be studied by all members of the Church. Indeed, it should!
It establishes, well beyond any shadow or shade of uncertainty, that the Book of Mormon, if not Divine Scripture, is at least a perfectly representative document of historical Middle East literature; strictly accurate in every respect, and fitting perfectly into the socio-political framework of 600 B.C.
Without embellishing or distorted the facts, Dr. Nibley presents all of the various aspects of life in the Middle East circa 600 B.C., according to the established findings of both Mormon and non-Mormon research. He then demonstrates how flawlessly the Book of Mormon squares with these facts.
And, indeed, the Book of Mormon has even the support of Holy Writ. Namely, the Bible, as he demonstrates in his chapter on Ezekiel's prophecy (Ezekiel 37:15-20). Ezekiel's "Stick of Joseph" is shown primarily to be the Book of Mormon, taken from the "hand of Ephraim"--Joseph Smith being a descendant of Ephraim--and joined together with the "Stick of Judah," the Bible.
Moreover, the Book of Mormon, Dr. Nibley proves, was not only a work of writing above and beyond anything Joseph Smith--who had no more than 3 years of public schooling to his credit--could have produced, it was above and beyond anything anyone could have produced in the early 19th century!
Dr. Nibley also furnishes examples of how the Book of Mormon sheds light on the tactics of humanists, skeptics, anti-religionists, and outspoken unbelievers in general. Reference is made, for instance, to the example of Korihor in Alma chapter 30; Korihor being a prime example of dogmatic humanism.
It is understood, of course, that the pugnacious anti-mormon rabble--as dogs by the wayside--persecute and revile Dr. Nibley, accusing him of partiality in research; of unjustifiable leanings toward the Mormon view of things; and of outright bias.
These claims of rancorous anti-mormon scandalmongers are, as with all of their other claims, pitifully groundless, having no more credibility than the accusations put forth in supermarket checkstand tabloids. One waits with interest but in vain to see even one example of where Nibley's scholarship falls shy of the mark. So, as usual, the anti-mormons produce what they produce best: claims without evidence.
I will add, somewhat, to the aforementioned statement of Joseph Fielding Smith, and say that all people ought to study "An Approach to the Book of Mormon"--not Church members only--if people can do so soft-heartedly, and with a searching mind.

A Scholarly Tour de Force

This work is an eye opener to the wonders of ancient manuscript study. Dr. Nibley has shown through erudite research how one can truly provide authentic evidence for the Book of Mormon by paralleling it with ancient historical data unknown to any 19th century Westerner when the text first appeared. One is amazed at the bountiful truth which is received on the antiquity and authenticity of a text when a scholar pursues meticulous quests into the writings of the ancient world for answers. Truly, Nibley has given the world more logical defense for the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ.
