From the Back Cover
The Consolation of Philosophy is perhaps unique in the nature and extent of its influence on Western thinking.

An eminent public figure under the Gothic emperor Theodoric, Boethius (c. A D 475-525) was also an exceptional Greek scholar and it was to the Greek philosophers that he turned when he fell from favour and was imprisoned in Pavia. Written in the period leading up to his brutal execution, it is a dialogue of alternating prose and verse between the ailing prisoner and his 'nurse' Philosophy, whose instruction on the nature of fortune and happiness, good and evil, fate and free will, restore his health and bring him to enlightenment.

The clarity of Boethius's thought and his breadth of vision made The Consolation of Philosophy hugely popular throughout medieval Europe and his ideas suffused the thought of Chaucer and Dante. This translation makes it accessible to the modern reader while losing nothing of Boethius's poetic artistry and philosophical brilliance.

About the Author
Ancius Boethius (c. A.D.480-524) was a Roman philosopher and is considered one of the last authentic representatives of the classical world, in both his life and writings. It is through Boethius' translations that the knowledge of Aristotle has survived in the West.

Victor Watts read Classics and English at Merton College Oxford. He is Master of Grey College and part-time Senior Lecturer in the School of English and Linguistics at Durham University.

A classic of philosophical thought--Key to the middle ages.
By A Customer
I didn't know exactly what to expect when I first picked up a modern-English translation of Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius' _The Consolation of Philosophy_. I knew that Boethius was held to be one of the greatest thinkers of his time--a child prodigy from a distinguished Roman family, a distinguished student of Greek, who essayed to translate all of Plato and Aristotle into Latin, and reconcile their philosophies (a task which he never completed). I knew that _The Consolation_ was held to be one of the most influential books of the middle-ages: translated into English by Geoffrey Chaucer and no less than two English monarchs.
I didn't expect the fusion of allegorical tale, platonic dialogue, and lyrical poetry (the genre is officially called the Menippean Satire)that I found. The issues _The Consolation of Philosophy_ addresses were already the time-worn province of philosophical thought by the time that Boethius essayed to address them: the nature of predestination and free will, why evil men often prosper and good men (as Boethius thought himself) often fall into ruin, the nature of the relationship between time and eternity. And the answers are mostly not new with him either: long chains of sophistical reasonings that prove, among other things, that evil men do not wholly exist, and that by allowing them to obtain their evil desires, God is punishing them more terribly than if he had stopped them. The answers are familiar, in tone, if not in exact content: a mystic-based neoplatonic vision of God as an eternal oneness, to which the soul rises through the layers of being. A somewhat recursively defined and unworldly 'good,' to which all souls aspire. Long passages on the vanity of worldly gain, the fickleness of fortune--all of them are familiar to readers who've read much classical or medieval philosophy.
But much of what feels familiar in _Consolations of Philosophy_ is not familiar from its sources, but from the many works for which it is the basis. It is in Boethius that much of the thought of the the Classical period was made available to the Western Medieval world. Thus, you find things in _The Consolation_ that echo throughout the Western Canon--the female figure of wisdom that informs Dante, the ascent through the layered universe that is shared with Milton, to say nothing of the ideas of the reconciliation of opposing forces that find their way into Chaucer in _The Knight's Tale_, among others.
But beyond the influence of the ideas, what _The Consolation of Philosophy_ has that is lacking in most other philosophical texts is a feeling of the importance of these ideas: Boethius wrote this book while awaiting trial and execution (he was ground to death in a mortar) on charges of treason, and though the book isn't explicitly autobiographical, the problems that it deals with were of the utmost importance to him at the the time, and he didn't have time to spare on superfluities. What results, then, is a philosophy made explicitly to deal with suffering: compact and full of emotion. Whether you read this book as a key to Medieval thinkers, an introduction to Classical thought, or simply as a way of looking at the problems that still concern us to this day, you should, by all means, read it.

Remains vital after fifteen hundred years
By Robert Moore
The particular edition I am reviewing is the Oxford World's Classics translation by P. G. Walsh.

This is one of those classics that can catch an unsuspecting reader completely by surprise, especially if one has read many other works by near contemporaries. The circumstances under which it was composed are legendary, and lend the work a legitimacy granted to few other works. Boethius was among the foremost government officials in what was essentially the successor government to the end of the Roman Empire. Rome and much of the rest of what would later become Italy was under the control of the Ostrogoth king Theodoric. A product of one of the leading Roman familes, Boethius ascended to a power of great honor and authority under Theodoric, only to be accused of treason late in the latter's life, at which point Boethius was imprisoned and condemned to death. While awaiting his fate (including whether Theodoric actually intended on carrying out the sentence), Boethius wrote this remarkable dialog between a prisoner whose situation closely resembles Boethius' and Philosophy personified as a woman. Although many topics are discussed, the heart of the dialog is the nature of true happiness.

Although few of its readers are likely to face circumstances as dire as Boethius', the work remains remarkably pertinent in an age where ideals of happiness are dictated almost entirely by our modern consumer society. Philosophy carefully explains to the prisoner that that happiness can never be found in such things as fame or power or riches and other things that are confused with the true source of happiness. For Boethius' Philosophy, happiness is ultimately rooted in the Christian God, but even for non-Christians, the lightly theological tone of the work provides much reflection on the nature of happiness in almost any kind of situation.

The Walsh edition of this work is, in my opinion, the finest readily available edition in English. The notes are marvelous, both providing overviews to each upcoming section as well as providing detailed comments on specific lines in the text. The introduction gives any new reader of the work all the context and background that he or she would need to digest the work. Best of all, the translation is exceptionally readable, and the translations of the many poems far above the average for most academic translations of verse.

I recommend this work strongly to either of two kinds of readers. First, for anyone who is a student of intellectual history the work remains for an understanding of a host of writers in the middle ages, as well as for many 19th century poets. Second, anyone interested in devotional or reflectional works, whether religious or philosophical, this remains one of the most essential works in the history of thought. By almost any standard, this is a work that demands careful reading and study.

Philosophy as Religion
By C. King Khidr
That Boethius was the "last of the Romans and the first of the scholastics", as has often been said of him, makes him a most unusual character in the history of thought. Serving as a bridge between two worlds, his writings, infused with the ideas of both Aristotle and Plato -- the two giants of ancient Greek philosophy -- allowed for the transmission of Neoplatonism into the emerging Christian intellectual tradition. Through the figure of Boethius the Latin West came to inherit many of the achievements of Greek learning.
The Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius's magnum opus, was one of the most widely read works in medieval Europe, especially in the twelfth century. No doubt, the dramatic context in which the work was written must have greatly accentuated its popularity. But there is more to the Consolation then simply a dramatic background, and this feature in itself would hardly explain the influence of the work on figures ranging from King Alfred to St.Thomas Aquinas. Boethius, being at once a Christian and a philosopher, was confident that reason and faith were reconcilable, and his entire literary enterprise can be summarised in his own words: fidem rationemque coniunge (show the harmony of reason and faith). An inheritor of the Greek tradition, he held that the world was a KOSMOS -- rationally structured, therefore rationally knowable. What makes the Consolation unique is that although it is a religious text, it doesn't make recourse to revealed religion; in Boethius's case, Christianity. That Boethius sought to answer religious questions without reference to Christianity, relying solely on natural philosophy, caused some later figures to question his religious allegiance prior to his death. But Boethius, as has been pointed out, believed in the harmony of faith and reason; being a Christian-Neoplatonic philosopher, for him to have found solace in philosophy does not imply that he left Christianity. For the truths found in Christianity would be no different than the truths found in philosophy, and whether consolation was found in the religion of Christ or Socrates would make no great difference. In the words of Henry Chadwick, "If the Consolation contains nothing distinctively Christian, it is also relevant that it contains nothing specifically pagan either...[it] is a work written by a Platonist who is also a Christian, but is not a Christian work."
The Consolation begins with Boethius lamenting his plight. Dame Philosophy descends to provide consolance to his bereaved soul, cure him of the extreme melancholy, and rid him of his misfortune, not that of his imprisonment and loss of worldly goods and status, but the spiritual ailment clouding his intellectual vision.
Boethius's troubles, Lady Philosophy tells him, lie within himself. He has been driven into exile by himself. "For if you can remember your true country...'it has one ruler and one king'" and the "oldest law of your true city, [is] that the citizen who has chosen to establish his home there has a sacred right not to be driven away". Dame Philosophy is here referring to his self, the mind. For Boethius, being distracted by external matters, (both the fortunes of his luxurious life and the misfortunes of his political imprisonment), has forgotten his real source of happiness, whose fountain lies within.
In short, the Consolation examines the raison d'etre of philosophy, and its capacity to bring about true and complete happiness -- a happiness which can be acquired by unearthing the hidden treasures which dwell within. Hence philosophy is not an end in itself -- a fruitless game of mental acrobatics -- anymore than a shovel is for one in search of Sophia's treasures.
Boethius expresses the Socratic idea that all men seek the Good, and the Aristotelian idea that this Good is eudaimonia. The attainment of happiness is found through a return of the soul to its primordial state, since "You, too, who are creatures dream of your origin". By the end of the Consolation, Boethius, remembering who he truly is -- a rational being endowed with a purpose, to actualise the good and fulfil his true nature -- recovers from his spiritual amnesia through a discovery of the remedy for his extreme sickness: philosophy.

Great strategies for teaching math to 3rd grade students based upon the common core standards. This TE would be more useful with the student workbook. The workbooks are where you will find the student foldable books for interactive notebooks, essential questions, homework etc. You will only find the example worksheets in the TE in miniature size. Also, be careful, much of the supplemental worksheets and many of the great features are only accessible on the McGraw Hill website which you need a district username and password. So if your district does not utilize this program, you will not have web access for students or teachers just by purchasing this TE. You need to purchase a year's subscription to have web access from the MH website and it runs about $150.

Sincere, simple Zinn makes Marx human and readable.
By Jorge Arias
Simpathetical appraisal of Marx through the man and hus family; unpretentious but witty and humorous; a good monologue, well timed and charming.

From the Back Cover
“A war is raging for the minds and souls of Muslims today,” writes Nabeel Jabbour. “The eternal welfare of 1.4 billion people is at stake. They are being pulled in two directions—fanaticism on the one hand and moderation and open-mindedness on the other. How we deal with this window of opportunity will determine our relations with Muslims for generations to come.”

At the same time, the Christian church must realize Jesus died for Muslims. In this book, Dr. Jabbour aims to help Western Christians go beyond mere tolerance to a passion for Muslims. He explains how that can be done in ways that are sensitive to Islamic culture, and he presents suggestions on how to build vital relationships with Muslims.

About the Author
Dr. Nabeel T. Jabbour was born in Syria and grew up in Lebanon. He lived with his family in Egypt for fifteen years before moving to Colorado Springs, where he works with The Navigators. Dr. Jabbour has a doctorate in Islamics and is a professor and frequent lecturer at seminaries and churches around the world. He is also the author of Unshackled and Growing, The Rumbling Volcano, and The Unseen Reality. For more information, go to www.nabeeljabbour.com.

Rave Review for Dr. Jabbour's New Book
By Edward J. Hoskins
The Crescent Through the Eyes of the Cross
Dr. Nabeel T. Jabbour
Feb. 14, 2008

Two days ago I picked up Dr. Nabeel Jabbour's book, "The Crescent Through the Eyes of the Cross" (NavPress). I intended to go through it little by little. I failed. A few minutes later I was drawn to it again and again and again. Last night I finished it. This morning ... I picked it up again.

Dr. Jabbour, an Arab Christian dedicated to knowing Christ and making Him known was raised in the Middle East. He spent the last six decades of his life walking around inside the skin of Muslims. He wanted to see life from their perspective. He lived with them, worked with them, suffered with them, laughed with them, and drank literally hundreds of gallons of tea with them. This book is the culmination of his life experiences.

In "The Crescent Through the Eyes of the Cross" Dr. Jabbour invites us to journey with him and his friend Ahmad and Ahmad's sister Fatimah. Together they explore Muslims' grievances (both men and women), our own imbalanced prejudices and assumptions, as well as the cause (and solution) of radical Islamic fundamentalism. As we travel the road he unwraps the Gospel and explores the Muslim and Christian worldviews, presenting the person of Jesus in a more sensitive and effective yet Biblical way. The journey ends with hope and doable practical applications.

On every page we smell the gun smoke of Dr. Jabbour's life and ministry. This is not the traditional "Muslim vs. Christian - My way or the Highway" approach. Over the years I have read many books about Islam and Christians relating to Muslims. In my opinion, this is the finest book of that genre I have ever read. If you want an insider's compassionate but objective view to the Islamic culture and practical, field tested solutions then DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!

Feelings and Grievances Examined
By Ratonis
In view of the lavish praise offered by prior posts, I feel almost guilty and unspiritual in offering my own rather restrained assessment here. But here goes anyway.

If you are involved in ministry to and among Muslims, then you will find this book to be a most valuable resource. If you are involved in evangelism and missions work in Muslim majority environments, not only will you find this book to be a valuable resource, but you will regard it as a "must read." If you haven't yet looked into the broad frontier of historical issues surrounding Islam, a book like this invites an exploration into the now vast literature on such matters.

Dr. Jabbour's discussion is built upon imaginary characters who bring various indictments against the West and express dissatisfaction at the way Christians view Muslims. These characters are, however, composites of real people known to Dr. Jabbour. This gives the narrative a lively energy, but it does mean that the entire book is anecdotal, and therein lies both its strength and (in my consideration) a weakness. Real people (even if cast collectively into an imaginary synthesis and given an Arab name) are real people who have experienced real things and have real emotions. One cannot question their feelings. The problem I see with this is that the anecdotal materials put forth by Dr. Jabbour can be countered by other anecdotes and testimonies that carry equal authority. The story of Ahmed's "sister" is a case-in-point. Reading her testimony, one would gather that Egyptian Muslim women are enlightened, well-educated professionals who enjoy many benefits from the Islamic culture. What, however, makes her statements more authoritative or reality-based than, say, the writings of Nonie Darwish (also Egyptian), Wafa Sultan (Syrian), or Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Somali)?

The author allows the imaginary "Ahmad" to state his concerns freely, and although the author expresses some misgivings about Ahmad's grievances, for the most part his challenges are very gently stated. Dr. Jabbour's goal is to foster a listening ear among Christians, to allow "Ahmad" to get it all out there in the interests of creating opportunity for dialogue. Again, this is fine if you want to read a personal experience book, but some readers (myself included) might like to see some more clarity as to where Dr. Jabbour thinks Ahmad is overlooking some things. For example, Ahmad indicts the Crusades (an almost default declaration raised against Christianity), but the reader might benefit from clues as to recent revisionist literature concerning that subject that challenge the popularly accepted "facts" communicated in Ridley Scotts's movie about the Crusades, Kingdom of Heaven. But again, that direction is not the author's intention so I won't make too big a point of it. (I don't want to critique the author just because he did not write the book I might be looking for!)

This book is about personal history. As such it is very interesting. It does leave the impression, though, that western concerns about the Islamist and the larger Islamic movement in the world are quite a bit off base, and could be solved by addressing certain "legitimate grievances" in the Muslim world. These grievances center around three points of departure: (1) the Crusades (the default indictment of Christian history automatically raised by just about everybody looking for indictments); (2) western colonialism and its destructive influence on Islamic civilization; (3) the Israel/Palestinian problem. Suffice it to say here that every one of these "legitimate grievances" could meet a response from other anecdotal composite characters who would testify that all of these indictments have their roots in Islamic practice and history itself. This being the case, I'm not sure that the statements of the imaginary "Ahmad" are all that impressive, however one might be inclined to allow them to go unchallenged in the interests of building a relationship. Nevertheless, as an example of lending a respectful listening ear in the interests of building a relationship that could lead to mutual understanding, Dr.Jabbour's book is a fine example.

I also thought the title was just a tad problematic. A more accurate phrasing might state: "The Cross through the Eyes of the Crescent." The book's structure is grounded in the series of indictments brought forth by "Ahmad," which leads Dr. Jabbour to write much about what is wrong with Christians' attitudes. Just for fun, I'll pose another imaginary composite character--let's call him Jake the "redneck Christian" (to appropriate Dr. Jabbour's language), who has some questions of his own for "Ahmad." Regarding the Crusades, the Roman Catholic Church has publically expressed sorrow, repentance, and appealed for forgiveness, over the Crusades, and those wars are generally viewed as an embarrassment by the widest swath of Christians. What more would you like to see? Ahmad, you say that the Crusaders attacked "our" lands over many years. Yes, they did, but how did they become "your" lands in the first place? What made your conquests good and their attempts at re-conquest bad? Ahmad, it is generally acknowledged by many scholars that Islamic civilization--once the greatest civilization in the world--went into precipitous decline long before the rise of the great western colonial states, and that this was a matter of intra-Islamic conflict (this conflict is hinted at, but not pursued here, by Dr. Jabbour). How would you address this historical reality in today's context? And Ahmad, how would you address the reality that thousands of Palestinian Arabs were forced from their homes in the post-WWII years by Palestinian leaders themselves, some of whom were key figures in the conception and execution of the "final solution" jointly favored in the Arab-Nazi alliance of that time?

My point here is that "grievances" are easy to arouse and state. Almost inevitably there's always a balancing one in view that is just as "legitimate" in the mind of the holder as any others. Dr. Jabbour seems to say that hearing grievances is a good place to start; yet the examples he gives of other composite characters--Muslims who came to Christ--seem not to have started out with grievances but are people with a prior and genuine curiosity about Jesus. Thus, the question arises as to whether those examples actually illustrate his starting point with "Ahmad." In any event, my curiosity is aroused as to how one might get beyond the grievance utterance. At some point this has to happen.

Given these criticisms, the book nevertheless arouses very interesting questions from "Ahmad." A couple stand out especially. Why couldn't one consider, for example, whether the Hebrew hero Samson was a "terrorist" (especially from the Philistine perspective)? Of even more weight is the question as to why Christians feel closer to Judaism than to Islam, given Islam's respectful position toward Jesus and his works, his Virgin Birth, and prophetic power? Of special value is the author's clarification of what is probably a big misunderstanding, and that concerns comparisons between Jesus and Mohammed. That is not the comparison to be made, Ahmad says. The more direct and appropriate parallel would be Christianity's affirmation of Jesus as God's perfectly expressed Word, with the Muslim belief in the Qur'an as God's perfectly expressed Word.

This review is of the book itself and does not take into consideration the Addendum, which I intend to access and study. Also, this is the first book by the author that I have read, and I recognize that he has probably addressed some of my concerns in other writings. I am not really familiar with his broader body of work.

Mahler Biography/de la Grange
By Phillip C. Webb
I am happy to have this volumn as I fear that Oxford University Press will not release their edition in the alleged 4 volumn set which was promised. The dust jacket on volumn four indicated that the final editing and additional material was being prepared for the last volumn (1) which is essentially this volumn. I doubt that there would have been much added to what was issued by Doubleday. I have contacted OUP to see if there was a release date for Volumn 1. If you recall, they begain with Volumn 2 back in 1995. Volumn 4 was released in the Spring of 2008. De la Grange is the consumate Mahler biographer so I am thrilled to have been able to lcoate this volumn. Again, I would suggest that you should get this, if you want a complete biography of Mahler by this author. (I believe the only time there has been a complete set released was in France as a 3 volumn set.)

UPDATE: Contacted OUP this week to see when vol one would be release. Was told that it would be released in January of 2013, a couple of years ago. That, after waiting for 2 years after vol four was released. The projected release date is not until January of 2017! De la Grange is now 88 years old. The above volumn is looking better and better now. I believe that the important indexes may not be available to readers if this project is not completed before he us unable to finish it due to sickness or passing from this life. Let's hold our collective breaths hoping that he can have it completed by 2017.

PS. I have just located the relatively new volumn on Mahler by Jens Malte Fischer (translated from German) here in the St. Louis Public Library. Saw it on this site but did not choose to purchase it until now. Since I have just started to read it (library copy) I won't say much now but it is very promising. Overall, will purchase a copy for my library well before I get volumn one of the OUP release should it ever be released. Sometimes it is better to just have one volumn to buy of anything!!!!

Just learned that the new release date for volume 1 of the OUP release has now been moved to January 2018!.

The Beginning (and the end?) of a great act of scholarship.
By Ken Clark
This is a monumental biography and I highly recommend it. There is one thing that potential buyers should know about this volume, though. When this volume was published, LaGrange contemplated a two volume biography which we all know ballooned into an immense act of scholarship, starting with volume two.

Just be aware that the second half of volume one covers the same period as volume two, which, of course, covers that period in much greater detail.

A masterwork of clarity and dedication
By Literato
Exclusive of footnotes and appendices, this work is 700 pages long. It is extremely well written and researched, and has many rare photos of Mahler and his family. It covers his birth in 1860 thru his engagement to the sleazy and spoiled Alma in 1901. The book coincided with Mahler's growing popularity in the concert halls of the Seventies. I got it for a Christmas present and lost track of it over years of moving. There aren't many copies available, so getting one will be expensive. But if you are a Mahler addict, this work will be well worth it. If you can only read one book about the Master, this is the one you want. Enjoy!

Leaders in Animal Behavior: The Second Generation, by Lee Drickamer, Donald Dewsbury

Animal behavior, as a discipline, has undergone several key transitions over the last 25 years, growing in both depth and breadth. Key advances have been made in behavioural ecology and socio-biology, in the development of studies integrating proximate and ultimate causation, in the integration of laboratory and field work, and in advances in theoretical work in areas such as sexual selection, foraging and life-history traits. Thus it is appropriate to relate the individual stories of those who have had significant impacts on the field as we know it today. Leaders in Animal Behavior: The Second Generation is a collection of autobiographies from 21 individuals that have been peer selected, and have provided unique and important contributions to the field in the past 25 years.

Review
"It is a fascinating collection of essays by a group who have all made (and many continue to make) significant contributions to this interdisciplinary field. I really enjoyed this book and would encourage anyone who wants a historical perspective on the field to read it. It would make a great starting point for a graduate seminar that traces the history of the development of major ideas in animal behavior and behavioral ecology since the 1960s."
