Be Awesome is Awesome

I love this book! "Be Awesome" is a highly entertaining and literate exploration of the social pressures and intimate concerns of many young women today. Hadley Freeman's brilliant wit, honesty and courage shine throughout as she encourages the reader to lay claim to a more authentic sense of self. I highly recommend this book to women of all ages. For those of us who blazed a feminist trail in the 1960's and 70's, it is an eye opening glimpse into the contemporary landscape our efforts have helped to create.

A must-read for modern ladies

I came across this book in a fashion magazine (of all places, you will understand if you decide to read it) and decided it should be an interesting book to read. I was right. This book mix of humor and life lessons is really good and it covers everyday topics that a lot of women might want to discuss or at least have questions about. In the end, a great book!

Wish I had this book when I was in my teens/twenties. Hilarious but also thoughtful and thought-provoking. I found myself laughing out loud on the train but also wanting to underline much of what this author has to say about being a young woman in today's world.

About the Author
Professor Jean Van Bladel is an eminent researcher and educator in fundamental electromagnetic theory and its application in electrical engineering. Over a distinguished career, he has been the recipient of many awards and honors. A Fellow of the IEEE, he was awarded the Henrich Hertz Medal of the IEEE in 1995 and the Distinguished Achievement Award of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society in 1997. With the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), he was secretary general from 1979 to 1993 and was named Honorary President in 1999. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Ghent University in Belgium.

Fantastic !!!!!!!!!

I specialize in Electromagnetic Theory and have read many texts on this subject matter. There are many very good texts out there but nothing even compares with this one. I thought this would be a copy from various other excellent books by Collin, Jackson, Felsen, etc. but I was wrong. Prof. Bladel has written everything of his own originality. There is a spark of his originality in everything ranging from the quality of explanations, the choice of subject matter, the extreme mathematical depth involved and the choice of unsolved problems. In every way, this book alone can replace five to six other ordinary books.

In elecromagnetics, the biggest problem lies in understanding. The more you learn, the lesser you understand and the mathematics can be demoralizing. And also a vast portion of the literature is scattered throughout so many books. But Dr.Bladel has beautifully brought all that together under one roof and has presented the subject in a very theoretically fine manner doing complete justice to the mathematical intricacies.

This book is a MUST if you want to call yourself a specialist in electromagnetics. It is a tome and the epitome of all good EM books !!!!!!!!! It is the "Stratton" of the 21st century !!!!!!!

Good but tough

Very good reference, but very mathematically advanced and demanding. Has tons of material beyond any intro books.
Some of the material is not easy to learn for the first time from this book. But if you have had a different intro to it then this book will provide another layer of deeper and advanced insight.

About the Author
John William Polidori was born on September 7, 1795, in London, England, the oldest of eight children. One of the first students at Ampleforth College in 1804, he graduated from the University of Edinburgh as a doctor of medicine at the age of 19. In 1816, he became the personal physician of Lord Byron, accompanying him on a European tour. There, they met Mary and Percy Shelley, and read aloud from “Tales of the Dead.” It was then, that each of them decided to write a ghost story, Mary writing “Frankenstein,” and Polidori writing “The Vampyre.” In 1819, the story was published without his permission and mistakenly attributed to Lord Byron. Polidori dies on August 24, 1821, at the age of 25, in London, England. It was a possible suicide, although the verdict was natural causes.

From a great mind not truly appreciated

Probably more legend surrounds the writing of this novella than the actual story itself. Polidori never received more than a few pounds, but the Vampire was translated into over seven languages and adapted for a play on the continent. Goethe cheekily says that it was the best thing Byron ever wrote!

However much this might be based on Byron's fragment, Polidori wrote it at the behest of a patroness after leaving Byron's service. Polidori had been teased and ostracised by Byron and the Shelleys. He himself was volatile and had probably had enough of being called Pollydolly.

The Vampire was published without poor Polly's permission, and under Byron's name. It sold like hotcakes. The mixture of melodrama and intrigue delighted the public and began our modern obsession with vampires which just won't die. Yes, there's the cliche of the innocent woman, Ianthe, getting seduced by the mysterious stranger, and her relation's slow unravelling of the danger. But it was Polidori's modelling of the Vampire on his ex-employer that has given this book longevity and made it a genre setter.

The Vampire is written quite well - the prose may be over-flowery but Mary Shelley's Frankenstein suffers from the same. The unravelling of the story as Lord Ruthven (pronounced Riven) takes the protganists further into his confidences, and the amusing ending, make it worth a read.

Well i must say that this book was given to me when i was like 8 yrs old, i read the book and have been hooked ever since on horror books especially vampire books and it's more than 10 yrs later and i still read this book! I give it 5 stars because this is a great book for young readers that want to start reading horror or vampire books..

Destruction of innocence

"The Vampyre" has a pretty impressive pedigree -- it was first dreamed up on the same legendary night as Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and the title character is based on Lord Byron (who actually got credited for the story). In fact, the history of Dr. John Polidori's short story is more fascinating than the story itself, a brief purple-prosed tale of innocence destroyed and a sinister aristocratic vampire.

A very naive, romantic young man named Aubrey becomes acquainted with a mysterious aristocrat named Lord Ruthven, and decides to go on a tour of Europe with him. But he soon discovers that Ruthven isn't the idealized romantic figure he thought -- he's cruel, depraved and has a corrupting influence on everyone he gets involved with.

Aubrey soon abandons Ruthven and flees to Greece, where he falls in love with a beautiful peasant girl -- only to have her die from a vampiric attack, followed by Ruthven being killed by bandits. Even more shocking, Ruthven reappears in London -- alive and well -- when Aubrey returns, and he has some spectacularly sinister plans in mind for Aubrey's sister.

The main character may be a vampire, but Polidori's story is less of a horror story and more of a study of innocence's destruction. Not only does Ruthven apparently wreck the morals of everyone he becomes close to (although we're never told how), but even the pure-hearted Aubrey turns into a glassy-eyed crazy wreck because of Ruthven.

Writingwise, I hope Polidori was a better doctor than he was a writer. His writing isn't BAD, but he tends to ramble in a purple, prim, distant style -- it feels like the entire story is a summary of someone else's novel, and he skims over the most interesting stuff like Ruthven's actual cruelty or his wooing of Aubrey's sister. But he does give the story an atmosphere of taut suspense especially when Aubrey is trying to escape Ruthven.

Ruthven (based on Byron) is a fairly fascinating character since he was the first aristocratic, elegant, attractive vampire that anybody knows of -- he's not just a monster, but a smart one who manipulates others to get the prize. We don't know whether he corrupts and murders because he's a vampire or whether he's just an evil manipulator, but strangely it makes him all the more fascinating.

"The Vampyre" has the distinction of being the first story involving an aristocratic, attractive vampire, and Lord Ruthven is a fascinating villain despite Polidori's clunky writing. Worth a read, if nothing else for the insights.

Performing Earlier Music

Many musicians and scholars have tried to determine how early instrumental music was actually performed. One person, Arnold Dolmetsch, used a novel idea to discover how music of the 17th and 18th centuries could be performed with at least some authenticity. He realized that since every musician was a performer, teacher and composer, and every musician wrote manuals describing how to play various instruments, he would only need to visit various libraries and other storehouses of old music to gain the materials he would need to further his quest.
By examining countless manuals written by teachers for their students, Dolmetsch discovered that there was a certain way to perform a trill, an appogiatura, a turn, etc., and that in many cases there was almost complete agreement on how to play these "graces" over a certain period of time. Furthermore, he immediately found that performance practices of his time (the nineteenth century) had changed.
As a result of his scholarly research, as demonstrated in his book, The Interpretation of Music of the17th and 18th Centuries, anyone can gain
a better idea of how the music of those centuries was actually performed. A completely "new" approach to the baroque and classical eras had been uncovered.
Meanwhile, there is still some unrest on the part of traditionalists who want to use 19th century performance practices. As far as this listener is concerned, it's up to the individual performer to decide: Do you want to stick to today's contemporary practices, or do you want to hew as closely as possible to the older, but more correct way of playing? Without this book, you'll never be able to determine which way is best.

Beauty is timeless, and so is this book

Here's the thing about the suggestions in Deidre Hall and Lynne Bowman's books: They work. This message was brought home to me in their first book, Deidre Hall's Kitchen Closeup, when they asserted that men like a certain kind of soup they labeled "Genius Soup". Really?, my skeptical mind thought. Well, I haven't made that particular recipe in a few months, and the other day my husband asked me "to please make that soup from Deidre's book." Bear in mind this is about the only item I've prepared that he's mentioned again months later, let alone requested as a meal. I took an informal survey and it seems others had the same experience as well.

And now, Deidre Hall's How Does She Do It? A Beauty Book. I will relate my personal experience in a moment, but let's start with the basics. Hall and Bowman begin this work with an endearing look at their own mothers, both clearly beautiful women in their own right, and their message is crystal clear: Beauty is timeless; it's only the tools that have changed.

To that end, Hall and Bowman go into detail about many of the beauty methods available in all areas today. They present the levels of the beauty preparedness one must have on something akin to the US Terror Alert Scale. If you find yourself nodding in agreement and recognition, prepare to do so for the entire book. Their sense of humor and self-deprecating attitude is made manifest as they detail many areas of beauty tools and treatments, such as: Sleep, posture, makeup, lighting, shopping, skin care, permanent makeup, hair care, plastic surgery, exercise, weight loss, dental work, and fragrance. Each of these areas is given a healthy (so to speak) treatment; no stone or eyeshadow palette is left unturned as Hall and Bowman pepper the book with pictures and anecdotes from their own careers and search for the ultimate beauty tips, tricks and tools in each area they cover. As in their first book, their tone is not at all preachy; my favorite line, for example, is "The girl who put down the books and slept will also look way better at the exam, by the way." Hall and Bowman make clear that they're sharing their hard-earned knowledge in each of the areas. They include interviews with experts when needed, and it's clear they're just as eager to learn as we are.

And now, to my own personal experiment with this book. The day after I received the book, I decided to turn a routine Friday night dinner invitation into a Defcon-, er, level-five event. For the uninitiated, level one is somewhere around rolling out of bed and looking ok enough to open the door and take in the paper, and level five is where one should be to attend a function like a wedding - or, in Hall's case, to be filmed for a daily national TV show. I primped, preened, painted, and incorporated almost every other suggestion from the book which was available at my disposal. Would anyone notice my 'leveling-up'? Well, compliments did pour in, and with every "Wow! What's different? You look great!", my smile got a little bit bigger. Bowman and Hall's suggestions aren't just fun to read; they work.

I'll end with one more anecdote. The same day I read the book, I was speaking on the phone with my grandmother. We normally chat about light topics, but our discussion veered to what her mother-in-law and family members took out of Europe when they escaped before the war. She told me they took religious artifacts, "and also they took the clothes". Now, she meant it in an only-the-shirt-on-their-backs type of way, but I couldn't help it - I had just finished this book, after all. I started giggling. "They took the clothes?" I said. My grandmother, catching my drift, giggled back. "Yes they did. The women took the clothes." Beauty is timeless, and so is this book. Buy your copy today.

Deidre is so open and honest about everything from plastic surgery and permanent make up to fitness and fashion. If you want honest answers, this is the book for you. It's a great read, very informative!

How Does She Do It?? A resheshing look at simple, at home, beauty tips.

The new book by Deidre Hall and Lynne Bowman was a pure joy to read. This book was not written by someone who has a mere theory about beauty tips, but by women who have been in the spotlight for over 30 years. Over the years, Deidre has been employed in a career that makes looking her best a necessity. Although cosmetic alterations are mentioned, Deidre and Lynne make sure they aren't pre-requisites to looking your very best. A few exercises, a simple change in posture, lighting,etc. make a positive difference in how we appear to others. I would have to say my favorite part of the book, is the simply put, everyday humor that we all need in our life. I laughed several times while reading the book and continue to think of funny comments made by Deidre and Lynne. I do believe these women knew what they were doing by making it humorous, because laughter and smiles are some of our best features. You will not be disappointed by this book and the hard work they put into it paid off extremely well. There were also amazing pictures of their friendship through the years that were highly appreciated. Hope you enjoy as much as I.
