From Publishers Weekly
Captain Chesley Sully Sullenberger became a hero after landing a distressed U.S. Air plane on the surface of the Hudson River in New York City. His fascinating and deservedly praised memoir reflects on his childhood love for planes and an outstanding 42-year career as a pilot—as well as how he and his family coped with the onslaught of sudden celebrity. McConnohie does his level best to fill Sully's shoes and delivers a solid performance, but the real highlights are the portions of the text read by Sully himself, sounding as cool, calm, and collected as he was on that day in January 2009. An enhanced CD with the voice recorder transcript of the crash completes the package. A Morrow hardcover (Reviews, Aug. 19). (Oct.)

"Daily Devotion to Duty"
By Alexander Clemens
I think that Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's book reads well. Very well, indeed. Were it solely about the five minute flight over New York City in January, 2009, it would have a lot of padding in its 300+ pages - but fortunately, and obviously (to those who know the author), it's not just about the world-famous events of the amazing ditching on the Hudson River - it goes far, far beyond that.

Highest Duty is a portrait of an American life. Sully takes us on a tour encompassing his small-town upbringing, discussing his parents' instillation of strong, consistent values, discussing his early love affair with aviation, telling personal and touching stories of his family and his remarkable wife and partner Lorrie, covering his life-long focus on improving safety and reliability in aviation, and reviewing his observations about our nation's commercial aviation industry.

While one might reasonably wonder whether a formerly anonymous commercial pilot would have a compelling story to tell - a story that goes beyond the brief flight over the Hudson River - the engaging pages of Highest Duty make it clear that Sully's story is engaging, gripping, and filled with lessons for us all.

quick read delivering a powerful social message
By Russell Scherwin
At first glance, this is an unspectacular work by a regular guy who takes a lot of pride in and passion for his chosen career.

At a deeper glance, this book has solidified my belief that one's life is defined by the outcome of inflection moments. These moments are rare, they come at unpredictable times and change everything. This is a book about a man who was (a) prepared to manage risks, (b) in the moments that mattered drew from that preparedness with flawless execution, and (c) performed his captain duties by ensuring his passengers' safety after the ditch.

The message to be taken out is two-fold:

1) Time is a dangerous agent that can remove lessons of the key risks, and every professional has a duty in understanding their landscape and drawing from historical perspective, in doing their job and being prepared for the unlikely, yet possible inflection events.

2) Service organizations have a duty to set risk management procedures that encompass known risks, and those they service should be able to define whether they'll pay.

I highly recommend this read, and remain in awe of all the people and events surrounding Flight 1549.

Poignant & stunning!
By genesrus
Found myself captivated by the book that Capt. Sully Sullenberger wrote in the aftermath of sailing on the Hudson with an Airbus A320. Agree with the couple of other reviewers that this is about much more than just the LGA incident. This book describes the ethos of a very modest, private and self effacing pilot and gives us a window into a career and a calling that saved the lives of some 150 odd people. I found the content on relationships and parenting very readable and poignant. What I found saddening is the dismantling of America that I see in all walks of life extends to even the airline industry. I probably realized it was happening but to have it spelled out by Sully .....the outsourcing of even the airlines: maintenance, machining and the incredibly low wages accorded pilots is STUNNING. I found the book well written and lucid!! On a somewhat separate note I find it beyond belief that we all prop up systems that reward Wall Street and their sinecures while driving the likes of Sully into penury!

What happened to the survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March in World War II? In a new edition of this classic account, Sidney Stewart gives one man's gripping answer.

In April 1942, Sidney Stewart, a 21-year-old U.S. Army enlisted man, was captured at Bataan. For nearly three and a half years, until he was liberated by the Russians in Manchuria, he remained a prisoner of war. Here is his account of this long and terrifying captivity. "It is one of the most harrowing and debilitating chronicles that I have read. . . . He describes the ordeal brilliantly; he harbors no resentments apparently, and he has emerged from an inferno of bestiality with utter serenity." ― Maxwell Geismar, Saturday Review "An impressive and moving book." ― David Dempsey, New York Times "His is no ordinary prisoner-of-war story; better written than most, it contains no tales of swashbuckling defiance. . . . The force of this book is its testimony to the indomitable strength of the human spirit." ― Manchester Guardian "The plain narrative of this story would by itself have been fascinating, but this book is far more than a story, it is a work of art." ― Andr Siegfried, Academie Francaise "Sidney Stewart's composed narrative is one of the most noble documents ever penned by a prisoner of war. The companions he writes about remained men to the end, until at last only one man remained; he survived to write this unforgettable, this magnificent story." ― George Slocombe, New York Herald Tribune [Paris]

The telling of one person's prison experience during WW II.
By A Customer
I first read this book over 30 years ago and still remembered it quite well. Having read the book again when re-published it fascinated me in much the same way it did when I was a teenager. This amazing account of Stewart's experiences as a prisoner of the Japanese during virtually the entire period of our involvement in the war is am incredible testimony to the will of one person to survive. In the begining of the book it is quite clear that our forces were woefuuly unprepared for war, making it inevitable that the Philippines where Stewart was stationed would fall to the Japanese. Although conditions were never good during Stewart's confinement they became unbearable toward the end of the war. His accounting of the slow loss of his friends to the rigor's of confimement and of his own perseverance to survive make this one of the very best books of its kind. It should be read by evey American so a truer picture of the horrors of war can be fully appreciated by all.

Wonderful. Sad, poignant, yet uplifting, going straight to the heart. My father was a POW, on a hell ship to Japan imprisioned in
Omari near Tokyo, liberated in the early '40's. So this book was deeply moving for me.

Archaeology: A Brief Introduction, by Brian M. Fagan, Nadia Durrani

Method and Theory in Archaeology

Archaeology: A Brief Introduction is an introduction to the fundamental principles of method and theory in archaeology, exposing students to archaeology as a career. The text begins by covering the goals of archaeology, and then moves on to consider the basic concepts of culture, time, and space, by discussing the finding and excavation of archaeological sites. By providing a distinct emphasis on the ethics behind archaeology, and how we should act as stewards of the finite records of the human past, Archaeology: A Brief Introduction continues to be a book with a truly international perspective, not simply focusing on North America or Europe.

Teaching and Learning Experience
Improve Critical Thinking - Archaeology: A Brief Introduction's "Archaeology and You" chapter provides students with career advice in an era when archaeology is transitioning from predominantly academic to professional.
Engage Students - Each chapter within Archaeology: A Brief Introduction highlights important finds that have shaped our archaeological perspective, and a global perspective that shows students that archaeology is the most global of all sciences, encompassing all of humanity.

Solid intro to science and ethics of archaeology
By Michael Willers
Brian Fagan is a lively writer with a clear enthusiasm for his profession., an enthusiasm that is in fact quite contagious. The scientific progression of archaeology has historically taken a somewhat circuitous course, with different theories and methods competing for the limelight. With this is mind, one can understand what a difficult task it would be to sum up this history, methodology and theory in one short book. Overall, Mr. Fagan has done an admirable job, and peppers the book with illustrative examples form prehistory. Nonetheless, there are some sections (particularly on archaeological theory) where I found myself reading and re-reading sentences trying to dissect exactly what he was trying to get at. I came away with a solid, though not complete, understanding of archaeologic fundamentals and the reality of archaeology -- and for a more complete picture, I will likely move on to longer, and more advanced, books.

Happy Buyer
By Javamon86
I am an undergraduate biology student and have little experience in archaeology. This book was recommended to me by an archeaology/earth sciences professor as a supplement to a class I am taking this summer. The class is an archaeological field lab and aside from some basics taught in a physical anthropology class, I have had no real experience in archaeology. I've read most of the book in my spare time and have found it has really increased my scope of understanding. We had an orientation for the class about a week ago and our professor introduced us to what kind of work we would be doing with what kind of artifacts and at no time was I lost in technical jargon (there was lots) but would have been had I not read this book. The book itself is extremely well written and is easily understandable for the layperson, such as myself. I will not be re-selling this book. Would also like to mention that the book was sent to me in the same condition as was listed in an adequate amount of time and that the seller was a good one.

Great Book for an Introductory College Archaeology Class
By archy instructor
This Book fits the Course that I teach At the Easter Shore community college. It is well written, and even though there are latter editions, I use this one as it easier to afford for me. In am attempt to hold the student cost down, I purchase them and allow the students to use them. If at the course end, they want copies, they can buy the latter editions. I have done the same thing with the Underwater Archaeology book by Yves Blot. You guys are most helpful and easy to deal with.
