Into the Black: The Extraordinary Untold Story of the First Flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia and the Astronauts Who Flew Her, by Rowla

The real-life techno-thriller from a bestselling author and aviation expert that recaptures the historic moments leading up to the launch of the space shuttle Columbia and the exciting story of her daring maiden flight.

Using interviews, NASA oral histories, and recently declassified material, Into the Black pieces together the dramatic untold story of the Columbia mission and the brave people who dedicated themselves to help the United States succeed in the age of space exploration. On April 12, 1981, NASA’s Space Shuttle Columbia blasted off from Cape Canaveral. It was the most advanced, state-of-the-art flying machine ever built, challenging the minds and imagination of America’s top engineers and pilots. Columbia was the world’s first real spaceship: a winged rocket plane, the size of an airliner, and capable of flying to space and back before preparing to fly again.

On board were moonwalker John Young and test pilot Bob Crippen. Less than an hour after Young and Crippen’s spectacular departure from the Cape, all was not well. Tiles designed to protect the ship from the blowtorch burn of re-entry were missing from the heat shield. If the damage to Columbia was too great, the astronauts wouldn’t be able to return safely to earth. NASA turned to the National Reconnaissance Office, a spy agency hidden deep inside the Pentagon whose very existence was classified. To help the ship, the NRO would attempt something never done before. Success would require skill, perfect timing, and luck.

Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, Into the Black is a thrilling race against time and the incredible true story of the first space shuttle mission that celebrates our passion for spaceflight.

Review
“Beautifully researched and written, Into The Black tells the true, complete story of the Space Shuttle better than it’s ever been told before.” (Col. Chris Hadfield, astronaut, author, Space Station commander)

"An absolutely terrific look into the birth of the Space Shuttle! Into the Black expertly captures, as never before, a history that spans decades, Cold War tensions, bureaucratic infighting and a multitude of seemingly impossible engineering challenges. But it’s much more than merely the cold facts of how the nuts and bolts all came together. It’s about the people…the men, women, astronauts, engineers, managers, and contractors who had the vision, faith in themselves and sheer guts to believe the impossible could be done; that a reusable, manned, winged craft could be built to routinely fly to and from earth orbit. There are stories of courage and heart-accelerating fear in these pages that even I, as an astronaut, was unaware of." (R. Mike Mullane, NASA Astronaut (Ret.), USAF Col., (Ret.), author of Riding Rockets)

"An unforgettable book, one destined to become a classic in the emerging field of space history. Moving effortlessly from planning meetings in obscure offices within NASA, the Pentagon, and industry to the unforgiving environment of high-risk flight test and flight into space, this book traces a remarkable journey and, along the way, introduces his readers to a courageous group of far-seeing engineers and astronauts whose bold vision and tenacious work gave humanity its first reusable space transportation system." (Dr. Richard P. Hallion, Senior Adviser for Air and Space Issues at the Pentagon, author of On the Frontier)

“Brilliantly revealed, Into the Black is the finely tuned true story of the first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Rowland White has magnificently laid bare the unknown dangers and unseen hazards of that first mission. He has also given us an amazing insight into a world of science and engineering, the victories and defeats, for the first time. It’s the perfect tale that educates as it entertains. Once read, not forgotten” (Clive Cussler)

“Into the Black isn’t just spectacularly researched, it’s told like a thriller, unfolding the edge-of-death tale of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s maiden voyage in riveting fashion. Rowland White performs a rare feat here, stitching together comprehensive research—countless interviews, declassified files, flight documents—into a tale of courage and daring as streamlined and elegant as the aircraft herself. Buckle in and hold on tight—this thing's got jet propulsion.” (Gregg Hurwitz, author of Orphan X)

“Rowland White’s account of Columbia’s inaugural flight in 1981,and all the preparations that led up to it, could not be a more timely reminder of what it takes to design, launch and fly a complex manned space vehicle. White’s research is thorough, his writing style is superb, and he has a gripping and fresh story to tell. This is a genuine ‘must-have’ book for anyone fascinated by the sharp end of space flight.”' (Piers Bizony, author of Starman, The Space Shuttle, and The Making of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’)

This remarkable book describes the final (and unpublished) chapter in the 'Race to the Moon'! Between 1961 and 1963, four groups of astronauts were selected by the USA -- three groups were comprised of those pilots who were assigned to NASA and were highly publicized as men who explored the Moon. The fourth group disappeared into the “black” world of the CIA, the NRO, and the Top Secret Air Force“Manned Orbiting Laboratory.” This is the exciting first-told story of these exceptional pilots who only became known publicly during the development and first flights of the Space Shuttle – flights into the real Black of Space. (Dave Scott, Commander, Apollo 15)

“Centuries from now the space shuttle program will beregarded as mankind's first mighty leap into space, not in a rowboat, but in atruly useful spaceship. White tells it as the great, magnificent adventure itwas. A superb book.” (Stephen Coonts)

“An extraordinary, carefully researched, tale of theevolution of America’s space program. White has unearthed a treasure trove offormerly highly classified facts and combined them with an insightful look atthe people who developed and flew America’s early human spacecraft and thefirst Space Shuttle flight.” (Hugh Harris, former Director of Public Affairs for NASA's Kennedy Space Center and Voice of Space Shuttle Launch Control for STS-1)

“Intothe Black told me stuff I never knew before – and I worked at NASA for 30years." (Michael Foale, former Astronaut and International Space Station Commander)

"This account ofAmerica's greatest and, in hindsight, most dangerous manned spaceflight is afantastic read. After I started it, I read it straight through. For more thanspaceflight geeks, this is the story of an astonishing adventure that, despitethe outward confidence of NASA, could have and perhaps should have gonehorribly wrong." (Homer Hickam, author Rocket Boys/October Sky)

If you love flying and/or space subjects, this is the book you've been waiting for
By Ralphem
Excellent. If you love flying, or space subjects, or the Shuttle, or the last quarter of the 20th century, you'll enjoy Into The Black. Written with authority by a man who love flying, the book details (and it is detailed) the intricacies of building Earth's first reusable spacecraft system, a historical journey off planet which heralded the arrival of the Space Age as a viable, doable concept. Even if you followed the newspapers and TV coverage of the entire Shuttle era, you never knew much of what really went on behind the scenes of one of civilization's crowning achievements. This book is a wonderful read and an exciting reveal of the Shuttle and it's political backdrop, much of which remained under wraps until now.

Engrossing history of the birth of the Space Shuttle
By T. Mentel
I have always been fascinated with the Space program . White brings the facts and the people to life in this book. Enough personal histories to give the viewpoint of the pilots, engineers and administrators, but not so much to slow the pace of the story. This look behind the scenes is engrossing and I hated to put the book down. The only thing better was meeting astronaut Jon McBride during my tour of Kennedy Space Center. At least with this book, I can relive the shuttle days whenever I wish!

How Small Business Trades Worldwide: Your Guide to Starting or Expanding a Small Business International Trade Company Now, by John Spiers

At some point in most careers one considers the idea of starting a business. Some people want to pursue a dream, some figure they can beat the boss at his or her own game, and for some people unemployment forces the issue. US Customs tells us most international traders are small businesses, and world trade continues to grow rapidly. Given the improvements in transportation and communication worldwide, inevitably now small business in USA has some international component...some more than others. Surely there is no safer investment for your time and money than self-employment. Surprisingly, for many who start their own businesses, making money is not always the prime motivator. Nonetheless, recent studies provide some remarkable information about self-employment: 80% of the millionaires in USA became so in their own career - 2/3rds are self-employed; the self-employed are four times more likely to be millionaires than others. It seems the most common career move in becoming rich is to become self-employed. This book now shows you how to build a business and takes you through the steps so you will know you can do it, and is structured so you may take positive steps after each chapter toward building your business. Surely you will finish the book before your business gets started, but by the time you finish the book, not only should you feel "ready to go", but actually be on your way. World trade is different from the domestic variety, and small is different from large business. Small Business International Trade has some specific challenges which this book illumines and solves. Starting a business is necessarily disruptive... but to what extent? Like the tennis pro who shows you how to get great improvement out of small changes, book assumes you can stand minimal disruption and risk. For those who desire to engage directly in world trade, and for those who are hired to do so, this book explains how small business trades worldwide.

Very well written
By Michael Beverly
I've read a lot of books about business, investing and similar and this one is superior in writing clarity and focus. It was written by a true teacher who has that special gift of being able to explain the complex and make it understandable. He is able to predict questions the reader will have and answer them. He has broken down the sequence a beginner needs to take to be successful in starting a small importing business.

Having not a clue about how the importing business works, I can't verify how accurate this teacher/writers lessons are, but having common sense (at least I believe I possess it) and a generally good sense of reading people, I firmly believe that Spiers is one of those rare people that really enjoys teaching and helping people and has written this book in the hopes that lots of students are going to be successful. I have read (and reviewed) other works where I thought the author was trying to sell something or was simply blowing smoke, in this case I believe that the writer is genuine.

Now all that doesn't necessarily mean this is the book for you, so read on:

This book clearly lays out a plan to start and develop an importing company, small at first but I think the basic rules would still apply to most companies as they grow. The plan, which I'll briefly outline in a second, is not easy in the sense that it isn't going to be hard work, but it is easy in the sense that it's understandable and taken small step at a time is something most anyone with a strong work ethic and a little bit of brain power could accomplish.

Now that we've weeded out a good ninety percent of the population, let me briefly outline the process that Spiers explains in this book, if it interests you still, by all means you should make the purchase.

Spiers explains that to succeed at importing (small business level) one must be an innovator, that is one able to bring a product to the market that is unique. This product doesn't necessarily have to be an unheard of product, it just has to be a little bit better and different from other similar products. With this newly designed product the importer can now compete on something different than simply price.

Spiers explains all the reasons to forget about trying to patent or trademark or to go to a far away country and hope to find some cool item to import and sell. He explains why it doesn't matter if you know someone in Peru or have a relative in Japan or think you have some other inside track.

Something people often forget when they are getting exited about an idea is that it must actually sell to a public, and despite what people often think the public isn't predictable and often acts in a counterintuitive way.

First the prospective importer must determine if this product already exists, then if there is any interest from prospective buyers (usually the retailers that would most likely sell this type of product). If there is interest, and it doesn't exist already, then the product must be costed (that is the importer must find the best place to make it and the total cost of bringing it into the country).

Once the importer has a cost basis for the product and knows what the minimum order that must be placed is, he then sets the sales force (independent sales reps) loose with samples to try and obtain the necessarily orders to meet the minimum order.

The key here is that the importer doesn't order the factory to make the product until such a time as the minimum order quantity has been sold to various customers. This reduces risk and gives the importer the greatest chance to succeed by not tying up money on losers and only going forward with winners (or at least with potential winners). A product initially ordered isn't really a success, that comes later if the product is reordered, only then will the customers of the importer be saying we need more product because the buying public liked the offering.

There is so much advice and how-to in this book, I've only just scratched the surface, some of the best advice is how to avoid being scammed and ripped off. If you've read this far and are still fascinated and interested, then I'll give you strong recommendation to purchase it.

A Remarkable Piece of Work!
By CB Twelve
This book is not only a bible of international trade, but commerce in general. The author breaks down every aspect of it. I now know how to locate suppliers domestically and overseas, establish a demand for a would be product, how the competition game can be won by the little guy, and so much more. He teaches how to get a prototype developed for your idea too. After reading this book, all you will need is to do some research which he teaches how to do, develop a plan, and put it into action. He doesn't leave you twiddling your thumbs. You'll be charged up to take action on your goals. That's for sure. I've never read any book like this one. He wants you off your can and making your move.

The Leadership Playbook: Creating a Coaching Culture to Build Winning Business Teams, by Nathan Jamail

The successful self-published author of The Sales Leaders Playbook writes his first mainstream leadership book

There are enormous differences between managing and coaching. Yet many companies and organizations encourage their leaders to coach teams without ever teaching them how and without creating a culture that supports coaching.

Nathan Jamail—a leading consultant, professional speaker, and the president of his own group of businesses—trains coaches at several Fortune 500 companies and learned that it takes not only different skills to achieve success, but a truly effective coach needs an organizational culture that creates and multiplies the success of every motivated team member. The Leadership Playbook shows leaders the skills necessary to be an effective coach and to build effective teams by:

  • Fostering employees’ belief in the culture of a company
  • Resolving issues proactively rather than reactively and creating an involvement that constantly pushes employees to be their best
  • Focusing on the more humane principles of leadership—gratitude, positivity, and recognition—that keep morale high
  • Holding teams and individuals accountable
  • Constantly recruiting talent ("building the bench") rather than filling positions only when they are empty
Combining research, interviews, and inspiring stories with the lessons that have earned Jamail the respect of the world’s foremost corporations including CISCO, FedEx, Sprint, the U.S. Army, and State Farm; The Leadership Playbook will dominate the category for years to come.

Nathan’s passion and attitude are contagious! His ability to engage an audience and compel them to take action is truly impressive. If you are considering investing in your people, Nathan will deliver the value and execute beyond your expectations. We plan on forging a long-term relationship with Nathan and his team. — Joe Lohmeier, Cisco

Enjoyed is an understatement. He was phenomenal!! I heard comments from seasoned folks that he is the best they have ever heard! He did such a great job of personalizinghis presentation to our group. He took the time to learn our organization, our acronyms (we have a ton), meet some of our people and incorporated that into his presentation. He even wrote lyrics to a little song using our acronyms that was hysterical…I would highly recommend him! — Jeanne Osterland, US Healthworks

Nathan Jamail conducted a Sales Leadership training for 45 sales and engineering leaders. The Sales Leadership training would be better described as a highly interactive engagement with a continuous exchange of thought provoking ideas. Through entertaining and relevant dialogue, Nathan challenged the leaders to evaluate their leadership approach in terms of expectations, coaching/practice interactions, fostering a positive environment and continuously hiring and cultivating great talent. Nathan was able to maintain engagement and participation throughout the 6 hour session through high energy, fast paced dialogue and interactive exercises. The training was extremely valuable to the leadership team by creating a consistent set of leadership expectations, introducing common terms and increasing leadership collaboration. — Jeff Sharritts, Cisco

Nathan is a high energy individual and it makes the message more believable when you can see that this guy knows how to be successful. Nathan took a lot of time to learn about our organization and tailor his remarks for our benefit. I would certainly recommend him to any group with new or experienced managers. — Marvin Mutchler - First Savings Bank - President/CEO

He is a phenomenal motivational speaker, captivating his audiences and engaging them in discovering and developing their skills and talents, allowing them to accelerate in their personal growth. I would strongly recommend Nathan and encourage anyone who values building and developing their sales teams to benefit from his professional services — Craig Walker, Radio Shack

After speaking with our sales team, I received only positive feedback from the morning we spent with Nathan. I’d highly recommend having Nathan speak with any sales force or group of sales leaders regardless of the current situation. Nathan’s message is one that can be inspiring for both senior level sales and entry level sales people as well as sales leaders. The message is succinct and to the point and really leaves you with an upbeat and optimistic attitude, that is, we’re living the dream every day!! — Ken Smith, Georgia Pacific

Nathan is one of the best leaders I have had the pleasure to work with in career. His skills at motivating sales teams to exceed their own expectations enabled him to become one of the most successful District Directors at Sprint. I would highly recommend Nathan Jamail. — Rick Kimsey, Advanced Wireless Services LLC

Understand the Principles of Coaching
THE FIVE CRUCIAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MANAGING AND COACHING

Stop thinking like a manager and start thinking like a coach.

Iwas talking to my dad, who is also a business partner of mine, about an employee at one of our dry cleaners. She had a bad attitude.

“What do you plan to do about her?” I asked.

“Nothing really,” he said, “because we need her to run the store. She knows the business better than the others.”

“So if she quit tomorrow, would we shut down the store?”

My dad chuckled and said, “Heck, no.” He then mentioned that when she called, he cringed at seeing her number. He didn’t like going to visit the store when she was there because it was such a “beatdown” (that’s Texan for “misery”).

“Dad, if you can’t stand this person because she has a bad attitude, and you are the boss, imagine what her coworkers think or, even worse, our clients.”

Like too many business owners and leaders, my dad was avoiding dealing with this person for all the wrong reasons. He said he had talked to her about her attitude and had even written her up for it. What he really needed to do was deal with her once and for all, but he never took that final step because he still believed he needed her. I encouraged him to have one last meeting with her to make her immediately change her attitude or know we would immediately take the steps to terminate her. He finally did, and the employee decided she would be a better fit outside the organization. Did the store close as she left, taking all our dry cleaner experience with her? Of course not. The store stayed open, my father put in place a new manager with the right attitude, and business improved—both outside and inside. In fact, several employees and clients came to my father soon after and said, “Finally! What took you so long?”

In not dealing with this bad employee, my father, like so many business leaders, violated two of the five essential coaching principles that demonstrate two of the crucial differences between managing and coaching: No individual is more important than the team, and never avoid conflict. Then again, most businesses and their leaders, especially when things aren’t going poorly, don’t deal with problems like these or any others that may lurk below the surface. The expression “high water covers all rocks” comes to mind. But when things get rough—when the water recedes and the rocks appear—most leaders have little idea how to act effectively, pull their people together, and coach them as a team to perform better. They work in management cultures where leading means stepping back and letting people do their jobs, for better or worse. No need to rock the boat now. It will be high tide again soon, right? Maybe not.

This is a major reason I call the management-culture mentality fundamentally corrupt. Hire good people and let them do their jobs? That’s a line handed down from outdated business books more than a generation old. Leaders today need to get involved and coach their teams to success, rather than manage them to mediocrity. Today’s business isn’t so much about today’s economy as it is about today’s leadership: Who is taking responsibility to actually lead? Technology and the competition move faster than ever before, and leaders need to implement a system for improvement and challenge their teams to compete at the speed of business today. Simply managing people and relying on them to develop themselves is not enough anymore. I’m not saying those management cultures were wrong for yesterday’s business or that they can’t work today; they just don’t give leaders the best chance to succeed the way coaching cultures do. Yet most leaders don’t understand what it means to coach, the differences between managing and coaching, or before all that, what it means to be a great leader.

The Characteristics of Great Leaders

Great leaders are ethical, compassionate, and humble. They are great students and constantly strive to learn more. They are empathetic but not sympathetic, show resolve in the toughest times, and believe they can get something out of everybody, never dismissing anyone outright. Great leaders are strong and decisive without being arrogant. They never use fear to make the team fall in line, or use bravado to compensate for a fear of being vulnerable. Instead, they use vulnerability and humility to gain respect while still exuding confidence.

Great leaders always believe in themselves and their teams—that’s how they get the teams’ individual members to sacrifice for the good of those teams. The teams know these leaders make them better and thus strive to please them. As a result, great leaders have a loyal—even blind—followership. In short, their teams love and trust them and their vision. But the ability to create a vision alone does not make a great leader—the ability to have it, communicate it, and get people to act on it does. When companies want people to communicate their visions or missions, they put them on cards, coffee mugs, posters, and newsletters. Great leaders know that stuff goes only so far. They know they must get their teams to do more than read those words. They must get them to believe in those words and make them part of the team’s everyday vocabulary without ever thinking about it.

Great Leaders versus Great Coaches

The differences between great leaders and great leaders who are coaches lie in their activities and actions. Leaders who don’t do the proactive activities and actions of coaching covered in Part Two of this book are not coaches. Leaders who choose to sit back and develop their people through reactive management activities designed to maintain the status quo are not coaching. They may have the potential to be a coach but not if they continue to sit back, refuse to get more deeply and proactively involved with their people, and say things like “My employees don’t want me telling them how to do their job, and I don’t want to do that!” Unfortunately, this line is just one of the excuses leaders make for not taking the time to coach.

For the record, leaders who are coaches are more engaged with their teams, but they are not always in their employees’ faces, getting in the way for the sake of getting involved and micromanaging everything all the time (although micromanaging is a coaching tool and can be approached positively, as we will see later on). Coaches just don’t fear involvement as they make sure employees doing their “thing” are aligned with the team’s “thing.” Yet understanding this and saying you’re ready to learn and implement the skills necessary to coach won’t mean much if you don’t understand the differences between managing and coaching. Turning managers into coaches begins not with action and activities but with accepting the fundamental differences between managing and coaching.

The Five Crucial Ways Managing Differs from Coaching

  • Belief in the team: Coaches believe in a team culture and the need to be connected to that team constantly so everyone performs better. Managers focus on individuals and then disconnect to let them “just do their jobs.”
  • Conflict management: Coaches make use of conflict to move team members up in the organization or out. Managers try to avoid conflict.
  • Involvement: Coaches get involved before action is needed (to prevent problems from developing). Managers react and get involved only when they are needed (when there is a problem and often too late).
  • Employee focus: Coaches focus on top performers (those who deserve attention). Managers focus on poor performers (those who need attention).
  • Team building: Coaches are always practicing and scrimmaging to make their teams better. Managers rarely practice.
  • Now let’s translate these differences into the five essential principles of coaching every coach must follow.

The Five Essential Principles of Coaching

  • Make the team more important than any individual.
  • Don’t avoid conflict—use it!
  • Act before a response is needed.
  • Pay attention to top performers and focus on making more of them.
  • Mandate EVERYBODY to practice.
  • Every one of these principles informs the coaching activity chapters in Part Two of this book. Skill practice, making tough decisions, rewards and recognitions, building your bench, game plans, setting goals, peer presentations . . . all of them require coaches to appreciate the importance of these principles. So let’s take the time to discuss them in a little more depth, especially the first one, which will be the biggest shock for most leaders who are managers.

    Coaching Principle #1

Make the team more important than any individual

Think about those star athletes who were or are great players but have bad attitudes that alienate their teammates, coaches, owners, and fans. Their talent may be undeniable, but so is their unlikability. They put themselves above everyone, and despite putting up some big numbers and occasionally playing in championship games, they rarely lead their teams to the ultimate victory. Most of these players, despite their God-given talent and gaudy stats, eventually destroy the team’s chemistry, and unless bound by a long-term contract their teams now regret, those teams release them, again and again. Sure, they usually sign somewhere else. Other teams and coaches try to work with them, thinking the results they generate may offset any personal problems. Maybe these players mature. Maybe they find the coaches who can turn them around. But usually those players aren’t about contributing to the success of anyone but himself or herself and are eventually let go again.

In business, we have the same superstars with good results and bad attitudes. Problem is, we don’t usually fire people like that or even confront them; we leave them alone. Even when their results decline a bit. Even when the team can’t stand them. Even when we can’t stand them. We isolate them so they can “do their job” and not annoy the team. We effectively say to them, “Hey, you don’t play very well with others, but you make me money, so I’m going to let you do your thing, keep you away from the team, and not push you to do anything outside your comfort zone. Carry on!” A lot of times, we actually try to give these people more responsibility as a “reward.” That’s like rewarding an irresponsible child: My kid keeps slacking on his responsibilities, so I’m going to teach him how to be responsible by letting him babysit his little sister. Not a good plan.

Exceptional Advice from a Successful Coach and Leader
    By Chris S. In TX
Nathan approaches leadership from the CI side, always expecting continuous improvement, and driving a team's performance through coaching. He uses several down to earth analogies and examples from some of the great sports coaches along with personal, and relatable experiences to highlight the importance of coaching talent to strive to be better. As in sports, your business team has inherent skills and abilities that will only reach their full potential through effective coaching. What is effective coaching? Probably one word sums it up the best - engaged! You must be engaged with your team to best understand their strengths and weaknesses and how best to grow and develop their skills. If your team is "sick", then you may need to remove the "poison" so that the team can heal, move on and thrive through effective coaching and leadership. I appreciate Nathan's down to earth and conversational style. He uses good examples to illustrate his points and I really like the summaries at the end of each chapter that reinforce key points. So, Engage with your teams and turn average into exceptional!

Nathan even writes like a great coach
    By J. Calloway
Sometimes when I read a book on business or leadership, I find myself impatiently thinking, "Would you please get to something I can use?"
Nathan Jamail gets to many "somethings" that all leaders can use, and he does it from page one. Nathan even writes like a great coach, with an accessible, conversational style that makes the book a pleasure to read. This is a book on leadership that works on both the intellectual level as well at the heart level. The ideas aren't merely thought provoking, they are action provoking. Any leader that wants to become a more effective coach (and, as a leader, you should!), will be able to use The Leadership Playbook immediately, and to great effect. This is a results driving book!

mentoring and leadership and this is one of the absolute best. I am putting my whole company
    By Jeff L Thompson
I have read literally over a 100 books on coaching, mentoring and leadership and this is one of the absolute best. I am putting my whole company, 50 real estate agents, through this book by holding a Coaching Culture book club. We are starting our second group in June. Read it, re-read it and then put it into practice. I can't wait to see the results, but like Nathan says in the book, "Coaching is hard work!!"

    Buyer Be Aware!
    By W. B. Glass
The other reviews of HONEYMOON IN HELL, appended close-by, refer to an old beloved and long-out-of-print Bantam paperback, containing many noted Fredric Brown sf stories, first issued when Rod Serling helmed Twilight Zone -- the first time around.

This (Galaxy Project) edition of "Honeymoon in Hell" contains only that single Brown novelette. The rest of the brief page count is padded out by boilerplate common to every (Galaxy Project) publication -- how important GALAXY MAGAZINE was in the 1950s, how important the length of the book's single story is, and how important the artist (whose cover image has nothing to do with the story) is. (Such attention to detail!: Despite this edition's Fredric Brown bio, his 1947 first mystery novel was THE FABULOUS CLIPJOINT, not 1950's NIGHT OF THE JABBERWOCK.)

Unique to each (Galaxy Project) is a context-setting introduction by a noted writer/critic of the field to the contained story. "Honeymoon in Hell" has a nice one by Paul Di Filippo.

Be Aware, for the price quoted, you're basically getting only the title novelette and an introduction to it, not the old HONEYMOON IN HELL, with multiple stories, referenced by other reviewers.

My stars are for the story, not for its packaging and presentation.

FYI: Same story is in "2nd FB Megapack"
    By Librarian
This is not a review, just a heads-up FYI to inform you this intriguing story is included in Wildside's "Second Fredric Brown Megapack" (for only $.99) where it is one of 27(!) FB tales. SF fans who already own that set should thus be wary of unwittingly repurchasing the very same story in this Galaxy Project edition. The key word is "unwittingly." You may very well wish to deliberately and knowingly purchase this edition because of the informative, supplemental material this single-story edition contains (though if you have previously purchased other titles in this Galaxy series, apart from the introduction to this particular story, much of that is essentially repeated here, too). The choice, of course, is yours, but I would recommend not only the aforementioned 2nd FB Megapack to get this and the 26 other stories, but the First FB Megapack as well to get 33 more (for a grand total of 60 stories) for only $.99 per volume (a mere $1.98 for both sets). That's a far better deal than purchasing this one story alone for $2.99.

    Not Brown's Best
    By Elliot
Fredric Brown wrote excellent mystery novels (try Night of the Jabberwock, for example), a few good horror stories (the title story in the collection Come And Go Mad and Other Stories is a classic), and a lot of science fiction, a field in which he specialized in what we today call "Flash Fiction"-- very short stories with surprising, often funny endings (several of these are available as free Kindle downloads). This novelette, unfortunately, is not his best. The emphasis on sex was very daring for the 1950s (nothing remotely explicit, mind you, but simply having a story whose plot turns on human reproduction was highly unusual in the SF magazines of the era), and the idea of an external crisis bringing the warring nations of the earth together was still a rather new one then, but today the story seems rather tame, and the surprises are dulled by the fact that many subsequent stories have used similar plot points.

I should emphasize that this is just a novelette (and not even a particularly long one), not a full novel. "The Galaxy Project" is reprinting novelettes and novellas which originally appeared in Galaxy in the 1950s as e-books, padding them with essays on Galaxy, on the story, on the artist who painted the cover, etc. Some of the stories in this series are first rate (Heinlein's The Year of the Jackpot (The Galaxy Project), for example), but this one is not (IMHO, of course).

On Computing: The Fourth Great Scientific Domain (MIT Press), by Paul S. Rosenbloom

Computing is not simply about hardware or software, or calculation or applications. Computing, writes Paul Rosenbloom, is an exciting and diverse, yet remarkably coherent, scientific enterprise that is highly multidisciplinary yet maintains a unique core of its own. In On Computing, Rosenbloom proposes that computing is a great scientific domain on a par with the physical, life, and social sciences.

Rosenbloom introduces a relational approach for understanding computing, conceptualizing it in terms of forms of interaction and implementation, to reveal the hidden structures and connections among its disciplines. He argues for the continuing vitality of computing, surveying the leading edge in computing's combination with other domains, from biocomputing and brain-computer interfaces to crowdsourcing and virtual humans to robots and the intermingling of the real and the virtual. He explores forms of higher order coherence, or macrostructures, over complex computing topics and organizations. Finally, he examines the very notion of a great scientific domain in philosophical terms, honing his argument that computing should be considered the fourth great scientific domain.

With On Computing, Rosenbloom, a key architect of the founding of University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies and former Deputy Director of USC's Information Sciences Institute, offers a broader perspective on what computing is and what it can become.

    Review

On Computing is an unusual, and welcome, mix of conventional academic text and personal odyssey...this book offers an innovative set of tools that could kick-start debate and research on the future structure of the sciences.

    (John Gilbey Nature)

Paul Rosenbloom goes well beyond the argument that computing is important and pervasive. His startling and well-grounded claim is that computing has become the fourth great domain of science, alongside the traditional physical, life, and social sciences. This book should be on every scientist's desk.

(Peter J. Denning, coauthor of The Innovator's Way; Past President of ACM)

On Computing by Paul Rosenbloom explicates a novel and profound theory of the computing sciences -- much as string theory unifies and underpins physics. It is an overarching vista of how the Computing Sciences continues to develop as the fourth great scientific domain.

(Ira Pohl, Associate Dean for Future Curricula and Online Education;Professor of Computer Science, University of California, Santa Cruz)

Computing science has transformed the world, yet we can't even agree on its definition or where it sits in the intellectual 'org chart.' On Computing suggests that the reason has been hiding in plain sight: computing can only be fully understood when framed as a new, fourth great domain of science. Along the way, On Computing also provides a wonderful tour of the frontiers of computing, clarifies the nature of multidisciplinary scholarship, elucidates the symbiotic connection between science and engineering, and tantalizes us with how much more awaits us.

(Haym Hirsh, Professor, Department of Computer Science, Rutgers University)

Overall, this book is a splendid contribution to the philosophy of science.

    The Meta-science of Computer Science
    By Bad Movie Buff
An excellent review of what makes "Computer Science" a science and how it relates to other sciences. I wish there were a shorter book on "The Scientific Domains" to more broadly introduce the meta-science concepts in this book.

    Excellent overview!
    By Seng W. Loke
The book attempts to provide a "roadmap" through computing, what it is at its core as well as how it dialogues with other fields, as we are seeing today and as things will emerge in the future. A strong and bold proposal, yet, I think, not unreasonable.

    By Paul Ledesna
Rosenbloom has every freshman at the University of Southern California read this book for his class, CSCI 109. It has no applications outside of the class, but he makes bank because so many students have to get it. Stop this man.
