I prefer the English edition, the translation in Spanish suffer a lot. I'm a fan of this particular book, but not in Spanish. Need to have a bilingual professional . Very poor rendition.

In 1991, Anita Hill, a law professor, dropped a bombshell into the middle of Senate Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas: Thomas had, Hill alleged, harassed and embarrassed her with repeated requests for dates and discussions about pornography while supervising her at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Hill's allegations introduced a volatile mix of sex, race, and scandal into the proceedings, deeply dividing both the Senate and the entire country. The aftermath of the Thomas hearings saw plenty of books about Anita Hill--some supporting her, others attacking--but Hill remained silent... until now. My world has been forever changed by the events that culminated in the "Hill-Thomas hearing" six years ago.��I am no longer an anonymous, private individual, and my name has become synonymous with sexual harassment.��To many I represent the courage to come forward and disclose a painful truth--a courage which thousands of others have found for themselves since the hearings.��To others I represent the debasement of the public forum, at best a pawn, at worst a perjurer.

But I am no longer content to leave the assessment to others, for they cannot know what I experienced--what I felt, saw, heard, and thought.��Whatever others may say, I must address these questions for myself.��I did not choose the issue of sexual harassment; it chose me.��And, having been chosen, I have come to believe that it is up to me to try and give meaning to it all.

Read this and you will know that HIll was telling the truth

When these hearings took place I was a busy 45 year old married working mother. I was somewhat interested in politics and was able to watch part of the hearings on TV. At first I wasn't sure what to think or who to believe but ultimately I decided that Clarence Thomas was the more credible, mostly because I couldn't understand why Professor Hill would have followed him to another job if he had done what she accused him of doing. As time went by I came to see what a poor choice for the Supreme Court Thomas turned out to be, yet I never reconsidered my opinion about Hill until recently when I read the book "Blinded by the Right" by David Brock. This led me to read Hill's book. Today I am 34 years older than I was when the confirmation hearings were being held, and in spite of being a somewhat privileged white woman, I've learned a lot in the intervening time about how the world works, including sexual discrimination, racism, and right wing politics. Having read these two books, I regret that I wasn't wise enough to understand at the time what was going on. I am so sorry that Anita Hill was treated so badly by so many people in power and that so many people like myself were fooled by the campaign that was waged against her. What she did required immense courage and not becoming embittered by the result required immense grace.

A Book to Push you Through it All

The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration:A Year of Motivation, Revelation, and Instruction is most likely the best investment I have ever made. Last year, I made a resoltion to myself to get in shape, eat healthy, and basically be a fit person inside and out. This is not a very easy resolution to fulfill, as I soon found out. It was my plan to run at least 3 times a week, and supplement it with another form of aerobic exercise. Very quickly, I lost my motivation, and was not living up to my expectations. I came upon this book soon afterwards, and tried to regain my motivation. After restarting my exercise program along with reading this book, I am now running every day of the week, rain or shine, hot or cold, I run through it all, all due this very book. If you buy one book in your life, buy Catcher in the Rye. But if you buy two, buy this one too!

Great for runners

A daily dose of inspiration for the runner so that when there is sideways rain at 4:30 in the morning and you don't want to get your butt out of bed you can read you daily page that makes you get out and run. Damn you book! My bed was so comfortable.

Of course I felt awesome after I finished my run:)

The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration

This book was given to me as a gift. Being a "novice runner" of two years, I found this book to be very motivational. It is very intuitive on the thoughts of runners and some of the obstacles runners may encounter and how to get beyond those barriers. I have thought it such an excellent book that I am suprised it is not readily stocked and available for 24 hour shipping, especially during the holiday season. You know us last minute shoppers. Great gift idea for the novice or avid runner in your life if you can find a copy of it in time.

Criticism for the public school system in the United States is nothing new; kids of all skill levels are slipping through the cracks at every age and in every city. Rather than attempting to change the system or point out it's failures, Jonathon Mooney and David Cole have created a practical guide to help kids jump through the necessary hoops to achieve whatever larger, postschool goals they may have. While much of the material is written for kids who've received the label LD or ADHD, many of the suggestions can be just as helpful for those who've been labeled "gifted," or any other student who feels frustrated with the daily routine of standard education.

The introduction (personal histories of the authors) is great reading for parents of LD or ADHD kids, and much of it has a humorous tone that makes it equally appropriate (and approachable) for discouraged adolescents. From the terror of weekly spelling tests to the few inspiring teachers and tutors the two encountered, the tales are equal parts entertaining, poignant, and encouraging to others who may well be experiencing quite similar events. There's little discussion of what methods are right or wrong--ultimately, both authors take a fundamentally pragmatic view, and it's "right" if it worked. A steady focus on study skills fills the majority of the book, and Mooney and Cole take what are generally pretty familiar stands on note-taking and test preparation and break them down into easily digestible concepts. With different methods for different types of learners (visual thinkers are encouraged to use maps and brightly colored markers), students will find plenty of help in creating notebooks, focusing their attention, and even appropriate ways of conducting the infamous all-nighter. Including information on how to recover lost class notebooks, how to make the most of a syllabus, and "The Seven Habits of Highly Disorganized People," Learning Outside the Lines provides students with plenty of tools to further each reader's personal idea of success. --Jill Lightner

About the Author
Jonathan Mooney is a dyslexic student who did not learn to read until he was twelve years old. After attending Loyola Marymount University for one year, he transferred to Brown University, where he graduated with an honors degree in English. Mooney is also the recipient of the distinguished Truman Fellowship for graduate study in the field of learning disabilities and special education.

Not recommended for those with reading comprehension issues!

After hearing Jonathon Mooney speak in southern California a few weeks ago, this book is one I wanted to check out as a possible gift for my seniors who are graduating from high school in May. My students are LD, and many have grade level reading abilities from 2/3 to 7. Mr. Mooney and his co-author David Cole suggest this is a good book for any LD or ADHD student going to college. After reading it, I must strongly disagree.

Jonathon is an articulate presenter and his story is compelling. A student who is ADHD and possessing a grade level (high school) comprehension level will find the content presented easy to understand. The amount of text and it's academic level makes this book useless for a student who cannot comprehend high school level text. It will never be read. The ideas presented are all sound, but verbose at times.

Both authors were raised in what appears to be intact, English speaking homes. This infuses many of their methods with assumptions about the level of home support the students they are guiding will receive. In an effort to "identify" with high school/college students there is an unprofessional inclusion of gratuitous profanity. Much more than was used by Jonathan when I heard him speak. To "improve" attention to their recommendations there are times when tantalizing subjects are used to attract attention. Since both of these men have some academic success, these are surprising. My intent is not to sound prudish, just disappointed since this is not a novel.

I can recommend this book's ideas for most anyone, though they need to be heavily edited for my students. Would I be plagiarizing to edit them?

Useful Information but Misleading Premise

The premise of this book is very misleading. I’m honestly not sure how this happened. It seems that the authors are very empathetic to the needs of LD/ADHD students, yet, there is nothing in this book that will actually help those students.

Learning Outside the Lines provides information on some basic study skills which would be very useful for those students that have never learned to study. Where I went to high school most-all of these were taught to us alongside the same tactics the authors deride (“Just study harder,” etc.). These are the same sorts of things you’ll be able to find doing a simple Google search for: “How to study well” (or) “how to become a good student,” things like: learning to compartmentalize assignments for greater manageability and maximizing information retention from textbook readings. The authors do make a point of allowing readers options to “individualize” their studying and education and to ‘take what works for you, burn the rest’ but will any of this actually specifically help someone with LD/ADHD? No.

What this book does contain is solid but there’s nothing in this book that doesn’t apply equally well to non-LD/ADHD people. The personal accounts, yes. The actual information, tips and guides, no. It seems to, almost, take for granted that the reader has, somehow, overcome their disability (and past/emotional relationship to school) and is now, in college, ready to begin as if they were never LD/ADHD and merely need to learn “how” to study. There’s not one bit of information on how the ADHD students who, according to the epilogue, could hardly even stand still into their 20s, managed to actually do the reading (skimming, it seems this book so frequently advises), the outlining, the research and the classroom participation required to follow this advice in the first place. There’s hardly any explanation for how a dyslexic student who couldn’t write until junior high became an Ivy League honors English Major, and much less any sort of “process” that could help others with different disorders follow in his footsteps. It’s as if in their climbing the ladder of education, now trying to help others up, they’ve forgotten the bottom rungs exist.

Good, but don't expect a life changing experience

Its a really useful book compared to most other self help books, and if your below the age of 16 a lot of the recommendations could actually be insightful. The description of the authors struggles growing up in the current education system is interesting and moving, however its undeniably similar to the experiences of many others. For me most of their tips were things I already do, self explanatory, generic, or really effort and time intensive. The first two thirds are a great description of how the system fails those with ADD and other LD, however the book never really conveys the solution beyond some pretty generic recommendations for coping tricks. I am not a fan of self help books in general but this is certainly one of the better ones, however don't expect much more than a very inspiring tale and a few insights.

Enjoy learning more about bats!

So what do we learn about bats in this book? They are:

Mammals * The only mammal that can fly! * Nocturnal * Like to huddle in their wings * Echolocation * 1,000 different species * Most are insectivores * Pest control * Vampire bats * Smallest bat - Kitti's hog-nosed bat * Megabats * Pups (baby bats) * Lifespan * Rabies * Endangerment

Cons: I feel the author misleads the reader when talking about vampire bats, he says "They don't suck people's blood - they only lick the blood off animals' wounds." Yes that is true BUT the reality is that they make the wound in the first place by biting the animal! The way it is written makes it sound like the vampire bat goes looking for wounded animals which is not true. He goes looking for a sleeping animal that he can enjoy a good feast of blood from!

Just so you know, measurements are in metric.

Don't know about your family, but our family are always fascinated to watch the bats in the warmer months. This book will help you learn more about these amazing creatures.

Fun information about bats

K loved this book about bats, we got to learn about small bats and megabats, how long bats live what they eat. All sorts of fun knowledge within this book. K found new words that he learned and can give you a definition which is awesome. For example insectivores, it is an animal who eats insects. I never know that, so it was a new word for me.
There is a picture for each chapter which is cool. I do think that the only thing the author could have elaborate on is the fact that vampire bats are the ones that cause the wounds to the animal that they suck their blood from. K asked me if the vampire bats just found an animal that was hurt and suck their blood and I had to explain. So I think the author could have added that bit into the book.
With the fun facts, pictures, new words it was a fantastic read that I know for sure we will be reading again.

Drawing on ethnographic research spanning ten years, Antoinette Elizabeth DeNapoli offers a new perspective on the practice of asceticism in India today. Her work brings to light the little known and often marginalized lives of female Hindu ascetics (sadhus) in the North Indian state of Rajasthan. Examining the everyday religious worlds and practices of the mostly unlettered female sadhus, who come from a number of castes, Real Sadhus Sing to God illustrates that these women experience asceticism in relational and celebratory ways. They construct their lives as paths of singing to God, which, the author suggests, serves as the female way of being an ascetic. Examining the relationship between asceticism (sannyas) and devotion (bhakti) in contemporary contexts, the book brings together two disparate fields of study-yoga/asceticism and bhakti-using the singing of bhajans (devotional songs) as an orienting metaphor.

This is the first book-length study to explore the ways in which female sadhus perform and thus create gendered views of asceticism through their singing, storytelling, and sacred text practices, which DeNapoli characterizes as their "rhetoric of renunciation."

Brilliant, empirically supported approach

Dr. Stosny has hit a grand slam home run, again. The healing approach in this book grows from the same fertile bed of research and clinical experience that made his boot camp for resentment, anger and abuse reduction so successful. It focuses on a betrayed person claiming and creating for him or herself a Healing Identity. This changes a betrayed person from a victim to an empowered person able to successfully choose improvement, healing, repair, recovery and growth over pain, suffering and shame. Betrayal can cause the betrayed person to feel inadequate and unlovable, the admission of which is too painful to admit. Stosny, as in the boot camp, provides practical steps that replace that loss of worth or value with ways to value yourself more, so much so that external adversity cannot touch the core of one's value. Stosny goes on to provide very wise counsel and steps when one betrayed seeks to love again, either in a new relationship, or in rebuilding a betrayed relationship. This reviewer is a marriage counselor, who has used Dr. Stosny's approach, now wonderfully set forth in this book, with many couples over the past years. It works, and works very effectively. This book is easily accessible by non-clinically trained readers, as it is written for the betrayed partner. Counselors and therapists will find it a valuable resource to grow their skills in helping couples and to give to couples with whom they work. This reviewer cannot recommend this book more highly. It warrants wide distribution to both audiences: couples and clinicians.

I liked it - but several weak areas

This was a helpful read with a really valuable and important premise. However, if you have history of trauma, this book should be used in conjunction with professional help. I really like the idea of building a healing identity and investing in your core value as a path to healing. Some things I thought were lacking: 1) the traumatic nature of betrayal was inadequately dealt with 2) self-compassion is a vital part of the recommendations in this book but it was not fleshed out well 3) there is was not enough instruction on how to help yourself when you feel vulnerable emotions. That being said I've gained something quite useful from reading this book and would recommend reading this while working with a professional. Betrayal is rarely something that can be worked through on your own.

This book gave me a lot of useful ideas and exercises that I can put in place now to heal and recover from my spouses infidelity. It has helped me to focus more on the future and how I can move forward rather than obsess about the past.
