A Book Whose Time Has CLEARLY Come

I was fortunate to be awarded a copy of the book for sharing my thoughts about the brand most relevant to me. As I started reading, I found myself nodding in acknowledgment of these basic nuggets of wisdom as to why traditional advertising just "ain't what it used to be." At last, the idea that it is time to let go of demographics is upon us! What an insightful book. I so appreciated the fact that the book itself was relevant in its clarity and simplicity regarding what sound marketing today is all about. I've got shelves of business tomes that are overwritten with so many parenthetical expressions I can't go back and find the actual beginning of the sentence. I especially appreciated the story on radio since my son also began his aspired career in radio. Happily he wound up in health care public relations earning far more than the "four and out the door" salary of a small station radio. But back to Relevance; the one-on-one discussions with brand leaders were great sound bites that made sense and provided meaningful information.
As an avid Cool News fan I had a feeling the tenor of the book would have the same crispness and punch. Tim Manners did not disappoint.
As a writer and marketing consultant, the actually proved beneficial since I used it to recommend a nontraditional, consumer relevant marketing strategy to a new client. Lastly, thought it was great that Tim acknowledged his Dad for teaching him to cook, sew and iron. I look forward more Relevance. Keep up the great work.

A must read for any CEO heading to DC in '09 for a bailout!

For all those people who spent years merging, acquiring, de-merging, leveraging assets and/or off-shoring others to make next quarter's numbers or next year's bonus in the bored-room - and then patting themselves on the back on CNBC --- why not try something new? Make something that matters. Treat people well (especially customers). Then don't fire people so they can't buy your stuff. Relevance shows you how! It's your step by step guide book to real success. For the rest of us, it's simply a refreshing read.

Today it seems any one can cut, clip, and compile anything into a self published book clutter and then self blog (or is it flog?) their ego - that's not this book and it's not Manners. Manners masters branding. He nails how business can work - and in rare cases - does. I've been in business 20 years and picked up at least 5 ideas I'm already using. It's a quick read too - perfect for a business trip. Just check out the cover and you know it's worth a look. After you enjoy reading Relevance, email Manners and maybe he will share his "strawberries story" with you. He sent it to me. It will lift your spirits.

How to not wast time, money, and market share providing your customers with things they don't want or need

This is a book on marketing. Maybe the subtitle should have read "providing stuff that matters" rather than "making stuff that matters" because what Tim Manners has to say applies to service companies, and non-manufacturing vendors as it does to the companies that actually make products.

The book warns you against getting caught up in ideas that seem cool but actually take you out of the sweet spot of your business. For example, in the first chapter on demographics, he shows you how companies get into trying to craft products for certain niches in their demographics and either waste a really good product that could have been used broadly, create a product the niche doesn't want, or one that can't earn any money because the niche is so small and the share of the product in that space is even smaller, or that the nice doesn't even exist. It is an illusion created by your database.

Each chapter begins with a series of micro-case studies on the topic, has a series of paragraph or two insights from well placed business people on that topic and a series of boldface bullet points that make the author's point about that chapter.

Words Their Way Curriculum Also Effective for Older Students

I acquired this book on the recommendation of one of my professors. I had heard great things about the program's effectiveness with younger readers, but was not convinced I could adapt it to suit the needs of older students with reading difficulties. However, because my students dislike worksheets as much as I do, I am constantly searching for hands-on activities that developed word attack and spelling skills. Donald Bear et al provided me with numerous games and word sorts to use with my reading classes. It has also been possible to extend the curriculum to a higher level by creating additional word sorts that focus on the specific issue of high school readers/spellers. In my opinion, this book is an essential resource for every elementary teacher, language arts teacher, reading specialist, or tutor.

Understanding how to help children read

Dr. Bear and his co-authors describe the stages most children go through as they learn to read, and they provide specific teaching methods that help students move from where they are to the next level of accomplishment.
Extensive research has indicated that a child's spelling is a window to his level of learning. This book provides diagnostic tests that only take a few minutes to give, but provide specific and valuable information about the child's level of literacy.
I have required my college students in Tests & Measurements to purchase this book and to perform tests on children.
Though the introductory chapters seem to be a "heavy read" to some, this book is clear, well-written, and practical. Teachers and curriculum supervisors would be well advised to understand the material set forth in this volume.

Comprehesive and useful

This is a good reference for educators to use when planning their word study lessons. I use the error guides to determine my skills-based spelling groups; this is very time saving and provides great insight into the individual child. I also use the McGuffy spelling assessment. Between the two, I have a great grasp on my students' word study skills. There are many great activities and games for all abilities. This is a good source for open and closed word sorts. Charts and game are very useful. Definitely teacher-friendly and well laid out.

Highly recommended especially for any one who has no previous knowledge if IC's.. This book goes to explain the fundamentals of the workings of semiconductors. This knowledge helps one to understand the layout and subsequent manufacture of an IC chip.

Insights into conservation and forestry issues

This is a description of early American public policy on forest management and conservation from a leading advocate and administrator of these policies, Gifford Pinchot, the first leader of the U.S. Forest Service during the Theodore Roosevelt Administration.

Pinchot notes that most Americans gave no thought to forests into the 1860s and prior other than the realization that forests existed. France had recognized three centuries earlier under Colbert, a minister of King Louis XIV, but this knowledge had not spread to America. As people cut into forests for their purposes, there was no consideration that any damage could arise from these actions. In time, beginning around the 1880s, it was realized there is a need to manage replanting of trees and management of forests is required.

Gifford's father was one of the original advocates of forest management policies. The author calls his called the Father of Forestry in America. The author saw well managed forests throughout Europe. He made it his mission to inform his country's residents about the advantage of proper forest management.

Half of all American forests were held in private ownership around the 1890s. Most owners sought to cut trees and sell lumber as quickly as they could. An underground market of stolen timber from government owned forest land existed, and the government did little to stop this practice.

In 1873 the Timber Culture Act passed allowed homesteaders to claim some portions of public land by planting trees on the land. This idea generally failed as most trees failed to thrive before the homesteaders were able to obtain title of their lands.

In 1881, the U.S. Agriculture Department created a Forestry Division.

Pinchot and Interior Secretary Hoke Smith created new forest reserve land. In 1897, President Grover Cleveland increased by more than double the amount of forest reserves to over 21 million acres. The author notes that no forest management plan was created for this land.

President McKinley saved the Cleveland Reserves. The Interior Secretary was designated as the official in charge of selling trees on national land and preserving forests from destruction. Most of the first appointments to administer this were on a patronage basis. They had little expertise on forest management.

Governor Theodore Roosevelt support creating state forest reserve preserves within New York. When he became President, his first Congressional message was to create a Reclamation Service. This was the beginnings of what would become the U.S. Forest Service. This service transformed much desert land into farmland.

Issues over grazing captured far more attention on reserve matters than issues over forestry. In tine, people became more aware that land had been overgrazed and forests overcut. President Roosevelt began charging for grazing on Federal land. This was soundly objected to be Western Congressional members yet Roosevelt refused to back down. The beginnings of a national conservation effort began under Teddy Roosevelt.

He further had the first inventory of the nation's natural resources ever conducted. He insisted that forest on Indian Reservations be held for Indian use.

Roosevelt ended many corrupt land use practices. This upset the corrupt politicians yet Roosevelt stood up to them. He created the largest deposit of phosphate rock ever, which secured its future use as fertilizer, and prevented politicians from exploiting this reserve for their financial gain. He halted selling public land with coal at undervalued prices. He stepped in and halted corrupt use of Indian land.

The author was upset that President Taft stepped away from many of Roosevelt's land practices. Pinchot declares that "conservative is the application of common sense to the common problems for the common good."

Observations of early forest land protection

This is a description of early American public policy on forest management and conservation from a leading advocate and administrator of these policies, Gifford Pinchot, the first leader of the U.S. Forest Service during the Theodore Roosevelt Administration.

Pinchot notes that most Americans gave no thought to forests into the 1860s and prior other than the realization that forests existed. France had recognized three centuries earlier under Colbert, a minister of King Louis XIV, but this knowledge had not spread to America. As people cut into forests for their purposes, there was no consideration that any damage could arise from these actions. In time, beginning around the 1880s, it was realized there is a need to manage replanting of trees and management of forests is required.

Gifford's father was one of the original advocates of forest management policies. The author calls his called the Father of Forestry in America. The author saw well managed forests throughout Europe. He made it his mission to inform his country's residents about the advantage of proper forest management.

Half of all American forests were held in private ownership around the 1890s. Most owners sought to cut trees and sell lumber as quickly as they could. An underground market of stolen timber from government owned forest land existed, and the government did little to stop this practice.

Great introductory textbook that is geared to help college students

This is a good, basic, plant sciences book. Don't expect too much detail, but for an Introductory textbook, it serves its purpose well and more. It is neatly organized into chapters and sub-chapters, and the end of each chapter has a clean summary of every topic covered. If you're in college, this summaries will help you a lot. I strongly recommend this text book.

This book is neither student or instructor friendly as advertised. "Chock full of color photos" means that the photos often seem more important than the text. The style and tone is that of an encyclopedia rather than an engaging textbook. I would not put my students through the agony of dealing with this book.

Rosanna Pansino is the creator and host of Nerdy Nummies, the Internet’s most popular baking show. She is a Washington native who, upon graduating college, moved to Los Angeles to start her own production company. Pansino launched Nerdy Nummies in late 2011, and the show’s audience grew very quickly. awesome ideas. Be careful when you bake the chocolate ...

Very cute book, awesome ideas. Be careful when you bake the chocolate chip cookies, there is a misprint. Ours came out VERY salty and after watching Ro's video, we realized the book calls for salted butter and 2 teaspoons baking soda (it should be 1 teaspoon according to the video and the butter was not specified so maybe try unsalted butter).

I ordered this for my 12 year old daughter and she cried tears of joy when it came! This book is AMAZING!!! Rosanna Pansino you have knocked this out of the park! My daughter is also a visual learning and this book has so many great step by step photographs! Every Recipe has 6 photographs. There are templates, a list of all the tools you need, and it's easy to read. You will NOT be disappointed, as my daughter said she could look at this book for hours and we can't wait to try out the lava cake for her 12th birthday! We are looking forward to having her book signed at the event hear in Orlando next week. Thank you for encouraging my daughter to keep baking! One happy Mommy here!

Great for anyone of any age! Ro has outdone herself!

My 12 year old sister loves to watch Nerdy Nummies on YouTube all the time. She got me hooked, and most of the time, I put off studying for my college lectures to watch Ro bake! This will be her Christmas present, and cannot wait! There are some really sweet recipes in this cookbook and anyone of any skill level can bake them! This is a fantastic and well done cookbook Ro! You have outdone yourself! Anyone who loves to bake or just loves Nerdy Nummies, this cookbook is for you! What are you waiting for? Go buy it!!
