Joseph Ben-David died twenty-five years ago, in January 1986. An eminent sociologist of science, and a co-founder of this sub-discipline, he was only sixty-five years old. Ben-David’s legacy includes ideas and ideals. Its central tenet is the autonomy of science, its right—and duty—to be value-free. Scholarship oriented to any goal other than the accumulation of objective knowledge about empirical reality, for him, was science no longer and did not have its authority. In this light, the life of scholarship was one of moral dedication, with nothing less than the fate of liberal democratic society depending on it. And for science to thrive, the university, its home, had to be the embodiment of the cardinal virtue of this society: the virtue of civility.

In the spirit of Ben-David, believing that scholarly debate advances common good, and rational discourse wins whichever way arguments in it are settled, this festschrift debates such core issues as the nature of science, its changing definition and position in Western society, the forms of organization optimal for scientific creativity, and the ability of the research university to foster scientific growth, while also performing its educational role.

About the Author
With Bachelor and Doctorate degrees in Chemical Engineering, Alan Wilson began his career in asset maintenance at Guinness, where he was responsible for managing the maintenance and project activities of over 200 in-house and contract trades people. He went on to manage the design, procurement, and building of new installations in Nigeria and the Cameroons. Wilson also worked as chief engineer for a large independent consulting firm, where he established and headed the maintenance management accounts with the Royal Navy, Kodak, British Nuclear Fuels, and British Petroleum and British Airways. Subsequently, he consulted for over 40 companies, including Ford, Shell, Amerada Hess, Anheuser Busch, Conoco, and Chevron and then launched his own consulting business, carrying out both project management and maintenance assignments. He has directed the design and construction of major new operations in Colombia and Hong Kong and assisted in the start-up of companies in the UK. Additionally he actively consults in auditing and benchmarking, strategy development, and the application of e-collaborative systems in asset maintenance. As a well-respected professional, Wilson is an advisor to many asset maintenance conferences and is a presenter at numerous seminars.

Hit and miss

Ever wondered what a book would look like if it was written chapter by chapter by some of the best authors in the field? Well, buy this book and you will know. The structure of the book is very good and covers a lot of ground. Many of the chapters (in fact most of them) are also very good, this is not just a high level and superficial treatment.
The problem (and I think it is a significant problem) is that all the authors have different styles of writing and slightly different emphasis when addressing issues. The result is a book that has a lot of information, but isn't really the guide it claims to be - the flow is insufficient to guide the reader through a process.
The book is good, it just isn't great which is a pity as the need is there.

Excellent Reference for Everyone

This book is complete, detailed, structured & full of good information that is easy to follow. It is the best book that I have bought on the subject of maintenance management to date, and is now one of the few constant companion books that travel with me. I would recommend Asset Maintenance Management to anyone in any field of maintenance management. At least one of the articles has a definite electrical diagnostic slant for our electrical bretheren.

My only criticisms would be that the spell checker wasn't functioning particularly efficiently at the time of editing, and I've noted that at least two of the graphics have been partially cut off at the base. Finally, this book is based entirely around fixed processing plant, and as yet have no seen no applications of the information to mobile plant.

In closing, maintenance principles, philosophies, strategies & tactics are roundly universal and this book is a "must-buy" for anyone of any maintenance persuasion seeking to continue down the road of Continuous Improvement.

Fun and Practical

I was unable to attend a week-long Wireshark training, so I got this book and worked through the whole thing on my own in a few days. It's excellent--lots of hands-on projects, and very clear instructions. Wireshark is essential for anyone serious about networks, either from the admin or security side, and there are lots of important techniques in this book that I never learned in years of working with Ethereal and Wireshark.

The accuracy is impressive too. I read books like this very carefully, testing each off-hand comment and reference, and the two times I though I found mistakes, Laura was right and I was wrong. This is what I hope for most when I get textbooks--the author is smarter than me! Researching the issues mentioned in this book taught me a lot more about Ethernet than I ever knew before.

By the way, I highly recommend watching the author's Sharkfest presentation which summarizes the material in this book and demonstrates the principal techniques:

Fun with Network Troubleshooting!

Laura has a way of breaking this "nutrient-dense" subject matter and making it palatable for even the most ADHD among us (squirrel!). Although bits, bytes, frames and packets are not everyone's cup-o-tea this book goes a long way toward "mainstreaming" network analysis for the "masses". If you are "good with computers" and you want to get a much better understanding of what's going on in your network "under the hood" then this book is a great place to start. Although, there is NO final exam for this 101 course, it WILL prepare you for 201 (hint to Laura).

Better late than never,I realized the importance of learning tools to add a bit of color to the job.As part of my preparation towards WCNA.I got this book to prepare.This book guided me to march on those uncharted regions[GeoIP,RingBuffer,TSHARK,EDITCAP,MERGECAP,HTTP Object capturing etc...] of wireshark.I recommend this book for users who are looking to enhance their tool usage(related to wireshark) in particular and network troubleshooting in general.

Steve Parker introduces the reader to the world of electricity. This is the story of everything from how the brain processes electrical signals to what our life would be like without electricity. He also gives helpful tips about how to prepare for temporary power outages.

Topics include: Electric charge, electricity from chemicals, circuits and conductors, magnetism, electromagnets, magneto-electric machines, manipulating energy, electricity in the home, electrical appliances, communication, heat, pressure and light.

This book is filled with pictures and entertaining facts. You can see how to electroplate a silver spoon or see a 1918 food beater driven by an small electric motor. There is information on farms of windmills and useful URL's for fun websites. A list of "Places to Visit" gives ideas for unique science and art museums.

A very good introduction to the history of electricty

It is a very good introduction to the history of electricity since the ancient times. Since it is about electricity and not about electronics, do not expect to learn about modern electronic devices. That is ok as the material is easy to comprehend even for children, and there is still a lot of interesting basic facts to learn that would be foundation for electronics. I only wish that there were a follow up book in the series about the contemporary electronic devices. The only thing that, I believe, the book really misses is renewable energy sources. I'd expect to see a wind mill or a hydroelectric power plant included in the contents. These two already existed in 1960s and can be explained without any need for modern electronics (unlike solar cells).

A coffee table book for adults and children alike

When though the book is lacking in breadth, it manages to cover a vast territory in a few pages. I'm impressed with the fact that it does seem as though you are touring an electricity museum. High resolution photos and cutaway sections of devices are labelled so that reading the captions become easy. I would hope that in the continuing editions, they focus more on transistors and silicon technology for the age we are in today.

I really enjoyed Bill's book

Being an amateur radio operator for 40 some odd years, as well as (recently) a builder, I really enjoyed Bill's book. The two things I enjoyed most were the parts about his use of old equipment in foreign lands, and -- since he's a diplomat -- his stories of being a ham while his vocation could well have prevented much of it.

I know he has other offerings, but I sure wish he could manage a second book that focused on those same two things again. It's a very unique situation.

Funny Yet Poignant MG Novel

Both funny and poignant, I never knew I could enjoy a middle-grade novel as much as I did "SLOB" by Ellen Potter.

Owen Birnbaum is fat. But he wasn't always that way. Something bad happened and now he's the fattest kid at school, spending his days being teased endlessly by his classmates, afraid that the new school psycho who carries a switchblade in his sock is out to get him, tortured by his cruel gym teacher, and dealing with his sister who has decided she wants to dress and look like a boy and be called Jeremy.

Life isn't all bad though. Owen is a genius and he can invent cool stuff, like a TV that shows the past--a past that is scary, but one that can answer the questions burning inside his head...if only he can get it to work.

When the Oreos from Owen's lunch keep disappearing, he's sure the school psycho is the culprit. Owen puts together a plan--along with a neat new thief catching device--to help capture the Oreo snatcher. What he doesn't consider, however, is that science might not hold all the answers.

Every middle-grade reader will find something to enjoy in "SLOB". More than a story about an overweight kid who is teased profusely, "SLOB" is the story of one boy's quest to uncover the truth about the tragic event that altered his life forever.

Speaking directly to the reader, Owen shares his struggles at school--which stink, but he's not overly upset about because he's smarter than all those guys anyway, his sister's involvement in GWAB (Girls Who Are Boys), the torture he endures at the hands of his gym teacher Mr. Wooly, and how things change for him once the psycho comes to school--not only is Mason Ragg a psycho, he's a smart psycho.

Opening with the line, "My name is Owen Birnbaum, and I'm probably fatter than you are.", Owen does not suffer from low self-esteem, as one might imagine. His being fatter than you is "pure statistics". Immediately, the reader is drawn in by Owen, and Owen is so entertaining and engaging that the reader will never want to stop learning more about him until the last page of the book. But then again, if the reader is anything like me, she's hoping for a sequel.

The contraptions Owen invents are amazing, and Owen describes them to you in detail and shares how they work. I can see a lot of middle-grade boys trying to recreate or improve upon Owen's inventions after reading "SLOB".

Potter has done such an excellent job of making Owen real for her audience that you'll soon forget that an adult woman wrote this book. And if parents are cool enough to pick up a copy of "SLOB" or to sneak their child's copy when he/she is off at school, they will be treated to references to The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Charlie's Angels and other hit shows from their youth. Of course, in Owen's world they are Retro TV, but we adults like to call them classics. I have to admit Owen's mother's name--which is Zelda--reminds me of The Legend of Zelda game my son played on his original Nintendo video game system.

I highly recommend "SLOB" by Ellen Potter. Funny and offbeat, yet equally poignant, "SLOB" is destined to add more awards to this talented author's portfolio.

Great Middle-Grade Book

SLOB is a little different than the OLIVIA KIDNEY books because the main character and narrator is a 12 year-old boy. The book starts with Owen telling you that he's not the typical twelve-year-old boy because he is "57 percent fatter than the national average for a twelve-year-old boy." From the first paragraph, I just knew I was going to fall in love with Owen. He is a wonderful, kind, insecure kid who just happens to be a genius (1 point shy as he reminds the reader.) He is definitely a memorable character that many young kids will relate to, and I absolutely adored him and can't stop thinking about what a fantastic person he was.

It quickly becomes clear that Owen and his sister Jeremy (she has changed her name to a boy's name) have been through a lot; however, the reader is gradually given hints that something tragic happened in their past. I had some ideas, but I have to admit that I was shocked with the secret. I thought Ms. Potter did an amazing job of telling this story and keeping the reader's attention.

SLOB does deal with some very serious issues, and my heart definitely went out to Owen and Jeremy; however, I have to say that I found this book to be hilarious! There was so much humor woven into this story, especially Owen's insights into life, that I don't consider it a "sad" read. The ending is definitely upbeat and the reader is left with some terrific messages. I think kids will feel bad for Owen, but I think they will absolutely love the mystery, suspense and humor in this novel. I know I couldn't put it down!

There are a lot of themes in the book that are relevant for kids in today's society including childhood weight issues, violence, lack of self-esteem, bullying, etc. And I think it would make a fabulous discussion book either in school or even in a mother/daughter (parent/child) book club. I believe that reading SLOB and discussing the issues in it might just open the lines of communication for parents and children alike. And, I know that Owen's battle and his resilience will strike a chord with many young readers and give them the confidence they need to handle some of the challenges in their lives.

When I finished this novel, I tweeted Ms. Potter telling her how wonderful it is. She mentioned that she has a special connection to SLOB because it is loosely based on the relationship between her brother and her. That made the book even more special in my eyes, especially the scenes with Jeremy. I can't wait for my daughter to read it!!!

Surprisingly Good

I judged this book for an award at a local junior high, and found it surprisingly good. The narrator, Owen, has a very believable voice, and while some of the book was a bit far-fetched, I found it to be an overall enjoyable read. The plot - a mystery, which begins with missing Oreo cookies - is quite good, and ties together excellently.

I would give the book five stars, except that I felt like there was a slight lack of depth. I realize that it's a children's/young adult book, but I felt the author could've delved a little deeper, and come out with a slightly more mature book. All in all, however, I would recommend this book to junior high kids, and maybe even lower level ninth graders. The only potential problems I see are the references to swearing and violence, but these are both so minimal, that I can't really see anyone complaining.

Plath was an excellent poet but is known to many for this largely autobiographical novel. The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly-written book, which remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity.

A great talent lost.

Every now and again a book comes along that truly impacts on one and once read will never be forgotten.
The autobiographical novel by Sylvia Plath, describing her painful ordeal when she becomes mentally ill is such a book.
This could have been a thoroughly depressing and self centred story in the hands of another and many may assume this when reading the blurb.
However do not be put off, because The Bell Jar is anything BUT depressing.
Plath writes with great humour and I laughed out loud more than once.
She also writes with the intelligence and skill of someone twice her age.
Her battle with mental illness (Bipolar Disorder) and her eventual recovery is written so honestly, so brilliantly I was more than impressed.
Of course there is sadness in the aftermath of the book because we know she actually took her own life at aged thirty, the same year The Bell Jar was published.
The world is a little worse off with the loss of this wonderful talent.
Anyone who has any inkling of how The Black Dog can grab you by the scruff of the neck from out of the blue will appreciate this book and anyone who simply enjoys outstanding literature will be equally impressed.

It already feels like it’s been a part of me for a decade

This book completely surrounded me, and I can’t believe I haven’t read it before this year. It already feels like it’s been a part of me for a decade. Yes, it’s depressing, but it’s so real. I felt everything in a very melancholy, all-consuming way. And it was wonderful. I found lines from the book floating into my mind as they related to my life. This novel sat on my heart for a very long time.

I'm amazed at how contemporary it felt. She talks about scenarios that still play out today (Post-grad blues, sex taboo, etc.) I think it mainly felt contemporary because she is so blunt and honest. And so poetic. What an amazing read.

Slow to begin, but a beautifully honest and compelling work

I'd been wanting to read The Bell Jar for some time, and finally got a chance this year. Upon reading through the first few chapters, I found the narrative style and attitude of Esther Greenwood to be highly reminiscent of Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye. If you loved that book, you'll probably love this one, too. However, as an adult who's grown past her Holden Caulfield days, I found it to be disappointing. The primary source of hope that kept me reading was that Esther has bright moments of insightful and intriguing thought, wit, as well as feminist thought and beliefs, each of which were really refreshing. On more than one occasion her musings led to deep conversations between myself and those around me. Though we may not all be slipping into depression and mania, there are undeniably pieces of truth and experience in what she says that many can relate to or recognize in themselves.
The novel gets far more interesting beginning around chapter 10 when Esther's mental illness begins to show itself much more drastically, and continues to spiral from there. The novel is largely autobiographical, and Plath's detailed descriptions of her experiences with mental illness are intriguing to say the least. Those interested in psychology could nearly use this novel as a case study. Much of the contents here overlap with known and recorded details of Plath's life, and if the reader is aware of these details, they will most certainly feel for Esther all the more strongly.
Plath's writing is solid poetic prose as one might expect, and the reading is quick. Most appreciated of all, however, was the honesty this book seems to convey; the willingness to bear all for the world to see, in all it's ugliness, insecurity, and even hope.
From a teacher perspective, I was worried this book would be difficult for my students because it is slow to begin and often dark. If you are teaching this novel, I highly recommend a focus on resilience, on seeking help, and on teaching about mental illness. I also highly recommend reading some of the more graphic chapters with students so they can be discussed. There are multiple detailed descriptions of suicide attempts. My students, however, are actually enjoying this book most of each of the books we've read this year. They like the honesty of it, and the graphic aspects and details (though we have not yet reached the notably darker mid-portions yet). They like Esther's sense of humor and her descriptions of things (especially the more adult content). Though my initial impressions of the novel were not wholly positive, I have been swayed both by the second half and my student's reactions to it. I do recommend teaching it, as there is much that can be talked about, but stick to an older age group (Juniors or Seniors. MAYBE mature Sophomores) and provide sufficient open discussion and support.
