Preface

The original idea for this book came from the realization that there were few comprehensive sources available with practical information about computer applications and information systems in health care. From its inception this book was envisioned as a guide for nurses and other health care professionals who needed to learn how to adapt and use computer applications in the workplace. As the outline developed it became apparent that this book could also serve as an informatics text for students in the health care professions. This second edition contains updates and revisions to reflect changes that have occurred in the rapidly evolving technology and health care field since the book was first written.

Each of the authors has a long-standing interest and involvement in nursing informatics. In fact, the same idea that inspired this book also led a group of nurses that included the authors to form the Tri-State Nursing Computer Network user group in 1988. This organization remains active, and has recently changed its name to Tri-State Healthcare Informatics Professionals, with an expanded focus to include other informatics professionals in addition to nurses.

This book is divided into three sections. The first section, General Computer Information, reviews information common to all information systems. It assumes no prior knowledge of or experience with computers. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the role of informatics in contemporary health care. Chapter 2 reviews basic information and terminology related to computer hardware and software. The section on the roles of various support personnel has been expanded. Chapter 3 emphasizes the importance of maintaining data integrity and suggests some practical steps to ensure current, accurate data in health care information systems. The fourth chapter addresses basic Internet use to support health care. The discussion on search tools and intranets has been expanded and content has been added on portals, e-health, and e-care. Additional information on Internet use and resources are found in the appendices at the end of the book.

The second section, Health Care Information Systems, covers information and issues related to the use of computers and information systems in health care. This section bridges the gap between the theory and practice of nursing informatics. Chapter 5 covers basic information on health care information systems, including decision support and expert systems. Chapters 6 through 15 discuss all aspects of selecting, implementing, and operating these systems. Chapters 6 through 9 discuss the processes of overall and system strategic planning, system selection, implementation, and training. Chapter 8 now contains additional information on testing, system evaluation, and strategies to implement system changes after system installation. Other pertinent topics are addressed in the remaining chapters. Chapter 10 discusses information security and confidentiality; Chapter 11, system integration; and Chapter 12, the computerized patient record. Chapter 13, Regulatory and Accreditation Issues, has been updated to include a review of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and its implications for nursing informatics and health care professionals. Chapter 14 covers community health information networks and Chapter 15 covers disaster planning and recovery.

Section III covers three specialty applications of computers in health care. Chapter 16 discusses ways that computers can support health care education. It now contains content on Web-based education. The title of Chapter 17 has been changed since the first edition from Telemedicine to Telehealth to reflect the growing acceptance of telehealth as a broader term. This chapter explores the growing field of telehealth, which uses computer and teleconferencing technology to provide top-quality health care to clients all over the world. Chapter 18 looks at ways that computers are increasingly being used in nursing and other health care research.

Four appendices are included at the end of the book. The first three provide detailed information on getting up and running on the Internet, using the Internet to perform a job search, and Internet resources of special interest to health care professionals. The fourth appendix provides suggested answers to the case studies that are found at the end of every chapter.

Each chapter contains pedagogical aids that help the readers learn and apply the information discussed. Learning objectives let the readers know what they can expect to learn from the chapter. Case studies at the end of each chapter discuss common, real-life applications, which review and reinforce the concepts presented in the chapter. Each chapter also includes a summary and list of references. The Glossary at the back of the book serves to familiarize readers with the vocabulary used in this book and in health care informatics.

We recognize that health care professionals have varying degrees of computer and informatics knowledge. One of the features of this book is that it does not assume that the reader has prior knowledge of computers. All computer terms are defined in the text and in the Glossary. Toni Hebda, RN, PhD, is a nurse clinician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Patricia Czar, RN, is an Information Systems Consultant. She has been active in informatics for more than 25 years, serving as manager of clinical systems at a major medical center where she was responsible for planning, design, implementation, and ongoing support for all of the clinical information systems. She has been an active member of several informatics groups and has presented nationally and internationally. Ms. Czar has served as mentor for nursing and health informatics students and has a Microcomputer Specialist certificate.

Book did not keep my attention.

I bought this book because it was required for one of my nursing classes. The book was in very good condition when it arrived. The content of the book is much to be desired. It was very dry and did not keep my attention. The topic of the book is, however, a difficult one to make sound 'fun' and unfortunately, this book did not capture it either.

This first novel may hold some appeal for bookworms, but a multitude of subplots proves distracting and weakens the tension. There are two basic story lines. The first revolves around a newborn worm named Fip, whose appetite runs to words rather than dirt. The second centers on sixth-grader Lerner Chase, recentlyAand unhappilyAtransplanted from Wisconsin to Washington, D.C. Lerner discovers Fip and realizes that every time he eats a word, the object it signifies disappears forever. The results of Fip's consumption can be pleasant (Fip eats a vending machine number and unleashes free chocolate bars) or dire (Fip eats the name of a newly charted star, sending its discoverer into a crisis). These developments occasion secondary story lines (e.g., about a sinister tycoon who employs thumb tacks and child labor to train the vicious dogs he sells as "Attackaterriers"). Amato plausibly sketches Lerner's evolving sense of responsibility about Fip's powers, including her panic when he almost eats the word "oxygen" and the name of her teacher Mr. Droan (but ends up devouring the words "Markus Droan's suit" instead.) The classroom dynamics between the ruling elite, Most Powerful Ones on Earth (MPOOEs), and the outcasts, Sorry Losers Under Ground (SLUGs), are believable enough, but with the exception of Lerner, most characters emerge as caricatures or types. Grade 4-6-The book opens with the turn of a page on the Bookworm's Desk Calendar, heralding the birth of a seemingly ordinary worm. But this is no common creature, for readers soon learn that he has a voracious appetite for the written word. It is sixth-grade Lerner Chanse who discovers that when Fip eats a word, that object disappears-forever. Lerner is having a hard time finding her place in her new school. She doesn't want any part of the MPOOE club (Most Powerful Ones on Earth), nor does she want to belong to the only other group-the SLUGS (Sorry Losers Under Ground). In a series of clever, if far-fetched events, she daringly uses Fip's power to turn the tide on the MPOOEs. Tongue-in-cheek wordplay in the quote on the desk calendar that opens each chapter prepares readers for the outlandish series of happenings to come.

This becomes a moral dilemma for Lerner, as the power to have things disappear can have weighty consequences. An Unusual Friendship

The book, "The Word Eater", is a book about a friendship between a magical worm, Fip, who eats words, and a girl named Lerner Chase, who is new at Cleveland Park Middle School. Being new at school, Lerner tried hard to fit in, but the school was ruled by mean bullies club called MPOOE, Most Powerful Ones On Earth. The bullies in the club called everybody else outside the club SLUG, Sorry Loser Under Ground.

At first, Learner tried to belong to MPOOE, having been tempted to do bad things that the bullies called "dare". Soon enough Learner got fed up with MPOOE's ridiculous and mean behavior and stood up for herself. After that, MPOOE labeled her as SLUG and made her school life miserable.

In the middle of her misery Lerner found Fip in school's Science lab and slowly discovered his magical power. Any words that Fip ate disappeared forever. Lerner tried many experiments with different words resulting a star to disappear, freeing children from child labor slavery, and many small and big accidents at school. But at the end, both Fip and Lerner realized that having a magical power is a very big responsibility and decided to get rid of Fip's power by eating the word, "Fip's Magic".

My favorite part of the book was when Fip ate the word MPOOE club and made the bullies club disappear forever. There are meanies in most school and I think many other kids would enjoy this book.

The older kids, both boys and girls, from 11-16 would like the book because of the justice served to the mean bullies club. I also think that little younger readers around age 8-10 would enjoy it too mainly because of the magical part of the story. I am 7 and, honestly, the book was little bit boring and hard at the beginning because the story was quite jumpy to introduce 7 different characters. I had to pause a lot and had to flip back to the earlier chapters. As the book developed into the middle and I was gotten used to the characters and I finished the later half of the book in one day. Considering that, I would say ages 10-14 will be closer audience group, both boys and girls.

I liked this book because it gave you something to think about. You really had to think about what Learner was doing when she let Fip eat all those words. If you can make sense of when the author jumps from different characters and places this is a good book for you. The names were very interesting it seemed that all the names represented the personalities of everyone. Like Mr. Droan and Learner Chanse. Learner had a chanse to learn a lot of things. Mr. Droan was very boring. This book had a lot of interesting details with humor on every page. MPOOEs and SLUGs were very descriptive just from their names. SLUGs are the Sorry Losers Under Ground and the MPOOEs Most Powerful Ones On Earth. At the school the only person who seemed to care about the kids was the librarian Ms. Popskavitch who alled everyone cookie.

I really liked the book because it was entertaining, and it was fun to think about being or having a worm like Fip. The names of the characters were weird. The librarian was really funny. She called everyone cookie. I liked the ending where they had the cartoon-like pictures. I thought the MPOOE club was stupid. It was a little over reacting because they thought they were the Most Powerful Ones On Earth. The name SLUGs was a mean name to make. Sorry Losers Under Ground is just plain mean. When i started to read the beggining of the book it felt a little boring, but once I got closer to the middle of the book, I think it got better. I think it was a really good book.

A Journey of the Mind

The techniques in this book really work. As with anything worthwhile, you just have to be disciplined to implement and use it, kind of like exercise. What one might miss when deciding whether or not to buy this book, is that memorizing stuff, is not a drab, boring dreaded task if done properly. Memory training is wonderful journey of the mind if done properly.

Here's what I've experienced:

1.)Weariness. I've worked out my brain, but then, like a runner, it feels great to relax. Most times I sleep better.

2.) It's know common knowledge that we think in words or pictures. (When we think in words, we are actually sounding them out in our mind.) When I've link words to pictures in my minds eye a lot of things happen. I've found it produces a calming affect when my mind needs to re-balance. It kind of Zen like. (There is scientific evidence to back this up.)

3.) I am more aware of the things around me included the most beautiful things in nature.

4.) My mind is stronger and sharper. It's a fact that an 80 year old man can build muscle and bone mass with a regular work out program using weights. I am 57 years old. I am now working out my brain. It now works better. It's no more complicated than that.

5.) Confidence: If you are good or better at what you do, you become more confident.

I can truly say that this book (and Mr. O'Brien's others) have changed my life.

Buy this book. Use it. Even if it serves no purpose, just put it away. Don't feel bad. But don't ever through it out. One day you might come back to it and it might change your life too!

PS After 29 years, I can finally remember my daughter's birthday.

Inspirational and Clearly Written

Dominic O'Brien backdrops his explanation of mnemonic techniques by telling his own story, which is quite inspirational. Also, he starts with the most simplistic, yet effective techniques and gradually builds on them to more complex ones. He explains why the techniques are effective and gives very clear examples of how to practice. He showed me that I do have a good memory, I just hadn't learned how to take advantage of it yet.

The only downside is that he did not clearly show how to apply these techniques to the school setting, which would have been much appreciated. The techniques seem isolated to party-tricks, random lists, names, and phone numbers. I am still giving this book 5 stars because it read well and delivered what it said it would. I hope he refines these techniques for academia and then shares with the rest of us how to do it.

Good techniques but could be half the length

When buying this book you need to know that it will not teach you all the common memory techniques which are out there. Rather it goes through the writers experience on the way to become the world champion of some memory contest. It goes on about how he has discovered the techniques and is quite lengthy in this regard. There are some good case studies/examples but too few and easy for my taste. I am writing this after having read 1/3 of the book but you can tell that his style goes on like that. The concept is good but the explanations are quite repetitive.

Marie Tuhart has done it again. This story is exciting, and steamy from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. I read this in one day. Her characters are real people. They have problems from their past as we all do and are trying to find their way through them together. The story catches your attention in the beginning and delivers through the entire book. Even when you get to the end you want more.

I definitely recommend this book.

A lush and tasty treat from Lobster Cove! When I contemplated how a BDSM club would fit into quaint Lobster Cove, I was a little skeptical, but Marie Tuhart did a bang-up job convincing me otherwise. She made me not only believe it possible, but integrated her characters seamlessly into the town's everyday life, and had me wondering why there isn't such a club in more home towns!
Jessie is the perfect heroine. Dedicated to her career and her ideals, she makes a safe place for those who want to play, yet keeps herself aloof from the games so that she's always aware of what's going on in her club. Then along comes Caleb. He-male extraordinaire, he's hot, dominant and amazingly empathetic. Who could want for anything else?
The BDSM lifestyle between the two is depicted with satisfying eroticism, but in such a way that Caleb never takes anything away from Jessie's strength. Extremely well done!

Red Club Temptation by Marie Tuhart is my first read by this author. This is a well written story with great characters, drama, humor and plenty of heat. If BDSM is something you don't want to read about, this book is not for you. I enjoyed Red Club Temptation and look forward to reading more from this author. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Interesting Story

Well this is a very good introduction to the world of Robert E. Bailey. I had the opportunity to read another of his books, with the same main character "Art Hardin". I very much enjoyed both of his books and I look forward to reading Dead Bang. If you like light detective stories I think you will enjoy this author no matter which of his books you begin with.

Great Short Read

I met this author at the Hanover Book Festival. I was unfamiliar with his writing, and he encouraged me to begin with this story story. I love mysteries, and this one did not disappoint. It reminds me of the mysteries I read when I was a teenager. Private investigator, mafia involvement, and fortunately, no graphic sex scenes. Great characters, great descriptions. Give it a try.
