About the Author
A former newspaper correspondent and managing editor for a number of magazines in Singapore, David Miller has written several commercial books over the years. His first novel Year of the Tiger was published in August 2012. Advent was his second novel published in June 2013. He is currently working on a sequel to Advent - the third and final installment in this series. The book is expected to be ready in 2016. In 2014 he published two non-fiction books. Bahau, the Elephant & the Ham recounts a true family story about a group of civilians trying to survive in a tiny farming commune in the Malayan jungle during World War II. DutyBound tells of the little-known exploits of a police inspector in Singapore during the war years.

Chillingly realistic and so well written.

I found this to be a fascinating read that was extremely suspenseful. David Miller has certainly done his research, as it would take a great deal of research and work to make the story so seamless. The book showed how the actions of a single person can have far reaching results better than any book I can think of, other than perhaps the Bible.

The plot was masterful. It was very realistic. And the characters were all well rounded believable people. They helped me understand better than ever before the motivations behind all the different groups involved.

This is not a book for children or young people. It is much too frightening and deals with very adult issues.

If you enjoy books by Tom Clancy, this is a book you should read. I think you will be drawn in the way I was, and carried through the story as fast as you can read. I can't wait to read the third book. I am very curious how David Miller will resolve the story. Thank you for a riveting read! And please keep writing, David, we're all waiting.

I just finished reading Advent by David Miller.� I thoroughly enjoyed this book and heartily endorse anyone to read it.�

Keep your mind open because this deals with tough subject matter. Mr Miller weaves a tale that is plausible within the societies in our current world. I am disturbed by the fact that it can be. We all need to stay aware of how our leaders and those around them can and do affect the course of events every day of our lives.

It is set in many locales and shows how different people and/or cultures perceive things. That knowledge is useful, to my mind. No one has a lock on all wisdom and is always right or wrong.

The book is a page turner and thoroughly engaging. I highly recommend this book.

Such charming protagonists.

The frustrating thing about this writer is she tends to give us more short stories than long. I just wish Crown Jewel is novel length. Yet the writer managed to give us two very charming and likable protagonists in Lazzaro and Celeste in a fairy tale like setting which is believable despite the length. The plot is tightly paced and we get to know Celeste and Lazzaro very well, their different background interesting. The mystery element is a nice bonus to the plot. Maybe the ultimate villain's motivation could be better fleshed out but this is the price to pay for the length. I certainly like the Cinderella flavor in the story even if I feel that Lazzaro feelings towards Celeste is too fast, which is at odds with Lazzaro's monkish personality. But this is afterall a fairy tale and our courtesan certainly deserves a permanent home and love with a prince.

Adam Szyszka is a Professor of finance and economics at the Warsaw School of Economics and at the Poznan University of Economics, Poland. Professor Szyszka was the Fulbright Doctoral Scholar and later the Kosciuszko Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Columbia University in New York. He participated in seminars and lectured at a number of internationally known institutions of higher education including Harvard Business School, Freie Universitaet in Berlin, Tsinghua University in Beijing, and the University of Adelaide in Australia. He has also served as a consultant to PricewaterhouseCoopers, an investment banker in Bank Millennium, and a partner in AT INVEST, which he co-founded.

Sullivan (Imaginary Animals, 1996, etc.) strips some classics of all their energy, rendering the tellings bloodless and often boring. The pages are filled with familiar and lesser-known characters: Davy Crockett, Johnny Appleseed, Molly Pitcher, a nd Calamity Jane share the stage with the River God's Wife, Pirates in Petticoats, Elfrego Baca, and Compair Bouki. Most of these tales are compressed into two pages, so there is no room for any build-up, no sense of rhythm or climaxit's all flat. The ver sions are often arbitrary in feel: John Henry's tale is retold by a grandfather to his first-grade grandson, and loses all the power that Julius Lester instilled in his John Henry (1994), while the protagonist of ``Paul Bunyan and His Blue Ox `Babe' '' is Winifred Winslow, who owns a lumber camp (Paul and Babe have walk-on roles). Sullivan does cast a wide net, with American tales from numerous cultures: rural and urban, native, European, and Asian. While children will be able to look up names or tales in Sullivan's general groupings, such as ``Characters Larger than Life'' and the sections on outlaws, heroes, colorful characters, and incredible animals, there is no bibliography. Stick with more vibrant collections, such as Neil Philip's American Fairy Ta les (1996), Mary Pope Osborne's American Tall Tales (1991) or Robert D. San Souci's Cut from the Same Cloth (1993). This was originally meant to be an anthology of tales told by other authors, but I found that many of the earlier versions were worn out, unimaginative, or lacking in realistic detail; and several were actually offensive, bordering on racist in their language.� So with the encouragement of my publisher, Paul Gottlieb, I set about writing a series of short stories in a style which cut through the old material with fresh perspectives, new characters, whatever it took to make the tales come alive again.� For example, to show how things looked from Casey's point of view in "Casey Jones and the Train Wreck,"� I found the names of railroad stations along the way from Memphis, TN to Canton, MI, and estimated how late he was running that night as his freight train flew past them:� "Sardis, Mississippi, 72 minutes behind schedule.� Grenada, 45 minutes.� Winona, 34 minutes.� Durant, 16 minutes."� He was catching up, almost on time, only to crash into the back of an empty train that shouldn't have been parked where it was.

Just for George Box's Fans

If you have read at least two books of George Box, you will like this book.

First, I believe that the most interesting part of the book is when he describes how he met all his friends (and also famous statisticians), and the good relation that he had with all of them. In addition, it's very exciting to read about the adventures that Dr Box had with Stu Hunter, Dr Cox, Dr Benkhen, Gwilym Jenkins, George Banard, among others; and how they started to work together.

On the other hand, this book contains personal anecdotes and adventures that lead you to know more about George Box's personal life. Moreover, you'll found that he liked to describe everything with as much detail as possible; as a great storyteller he was.

I always wanted to meet Dr. Box; after I read this book, I did.

Early life was most interesting, some helpful statistical insights for non-statisticians

I found his early life experiences very interesting, especially his inventiveness and creativity as a young person. The accounts of his work stimulated me to begin reading the 1978 edition of Statistics for Experimenters by GEP Box, WG Hunter, and JS Hunter. His accounts of real-life situations (industrial, experimental, or social) compellingly demonstrated the need for creative common sense, scientific collaboration, and the development of better mathematical modeling in both design and analysis. This book gave more detail on his personal life than I expected in an autobiography of a scientist -- though not always as candid as I would hope in an independent biography, there were a few refreshingly candid admissions. Box is a good story teller, but I don't know whether his anecdotes, poems, and songs are good literature. Overall, worth reading if you have any interest in science, mathematical modeling, experimental/industrial design, or anecdotes.

A very worthwhile read

If you are interested in the life of a great scientist (not just a mere statistician), this is a must read. George Box was among the great thinkers of his time, and knew, and worked with, many others of his caliber (a large cast of such characters appears in the book).

Professor Box wrote this book in his nineties, and in a state of health that was at times so fragile that he was admitted to hospice on numerous occasions (only to escape again!). While he was writing the memoir, he also co-authored two award-winning articles that appeared in the journal, Quality Engineering. Not bad.

About the Author
David Seyfort Ruegg was born in 1931 in New York. His university education was primarily in Paris, where he studied Indology under Jean Filliozat and Louis Renou and Tibetology under Marcelle Lalou and Rolf Stein. Seyfort Ruegg's work has ranged over most aspects of Indian and Tibetan Studies. However two interests come back repeatedly: the philosophy of the buddha nature (tathagatagarbha) and the philosophy of the middle (madhyamaka). Seyfort Ruegg has held professorial positions in several major universities-Leiden, Seattle, Hamburg, and now the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. A Sanskritist and a Tibetologist, he has at one time or another held chairs in Indian Philosophy, Buddhist Studies, and Tibetan.

Tom J.F. Tillemans is Professor Emeritus of Buddhist Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Languages and Civilizations at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. With a focus on Buddhist logic and epistemology, Madhyamaka philosophy, and comparative philosophy, he was from 1998-2006 co-editor of the Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies. Born in 1950 in the Netherlands and raised in Canada, he now serves as a senior project editor for the 84000 project tasked with translating the scriptures of the Tibetan Buddhist canon. He divides his time between Switzerland and British Columbia, Canada.

Worthwhile, but mixed feelings about it

The Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism series is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Buddhism, and Ruegg is one of the most eminent scholars in the field, so when I saw that he had a volume in the series forthcoming I was very excited. I was envisioning a sort of masterful capstone work on Madhyamaka. Alas, this is not it - what we have here are reprints of some of his essays from various scholarly journals.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of people will find this helpful and the material itself is valuable. But if you, like me, have access to JSTOR, there is very little value added with this volume. I already had nearly all of the articles herein. Furthermore, there is only a brief two or three page preface, and no introduction! I would have expected at least a fifteen page introduction - a little new material to justify the cost. In addition, although Amazon lists the language as English, you also may want to note that no less than a fifth of the essays are in French. It's hard to understand how they justify a $40 list price for a paperback with no new material, and which makes no effort to make the old material accessible to the general English-reading audience to which it is marketed.

That said, I consider my purchase a charitable donation to Wisdom Publications, which is, after all, a nonprofit that I am happy to support. In general the Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism series is amazing, so the publisher may be forgiven for falling short after having set the bar so high.

In this warm, entertaining debut novel, Canales follows Sofia from early childhood through her teen years, when she receives a scholarship to attend an exclusive boarding school. Each chapter centers on the vivid particulars of Mexican American traditions--celebrating the Day of the Dead, preparing for a cousin's quinceanera. The explanations of cultural traditions never feel too purposeful; they are always rooted in immediate, authentic family emotions, and in Canales' exuberant storytelling, which, like a good anecdote shared between friends, finds both humor and absurdity in sharply observed, painful situations--from weathering slurs and other blatant harassment to learning what it means to leave her community for a privileged, predominately white school. Novel will connect with Latinx readers who straddle two cultures and find value in each

The Tequila Worm begins as vignettes and then moves into a more traditional narrative when Sofia, the Mexican-American protagonist, is a fourteen-year-old high school freshman. In the beginning, a younger Sofia relays special family-centered moments–some downright hysterical and others more poignant–such as her First Communion, making cascarones for Easter, and celebrating both Halloween and D�a de los Muertos. Throughout these moments, Sofia learns about her culture and, at times, is torn between her tight-knit community and the “American” world beyond her barrio in McAllen, Texas. After trick-or-treating in her neighborhood and then in another, wealthier part of town, Sofia has this conversation with her father:

“I wish I lived on the other side of town,” I said, looking out the window at the darkness.

“Why, mi’ja?”

“Because they live in nice houses, and they’re warm.”

“Ah, but there’s warmth on this side, too.”

“But…it’s really cold at home, and most of the houses around us are falling apart.”

“Yes, but we have our music, our foods, our traditions. And the warm hearts of our families.”

Another example is when Sofia is verbally bullied, called a “Taco Head” by students when she eats her homemade lunch at school. First, she is embarrassed and avoids the cafeteria entirely, spending that time on the playground or eating inside a stall in the girls’ bathroom to avoid ridicule. With the help of a P.E. teacher, Sofia returns to the lunch room, proudly eats her tacos in public, and is given the advice to get even, not by kicking the bully (which Sofia wants to do) but by kicking her butt at school.

Sofia, indeed, excels in academics and is offered a scholarship to St. Luke’s Episcopal School, a prestigious boarding school in Austin. Sofia’s family doesn’t understand why she wants to leave her home. When her mother asks, “But what’s wrong with here?” Sofia responds, “Nothing. But the Valley is not the whole world…I just want to see what’s out there.”

Eventually, Sofia’s family allows her to attend St. Luke’s, as long as she promises to remain connected and learn how to be a good comadre to her sister Lucy and cousin Berta. In the place she calls “Another Mundo,” Sofia learns to appreciate her family’s stories and traditions, understanding how they have shaped her and connected her to a community rich in other ways. The young girl who once hid after being called a “Taco Head,” grows into a young adult who is “brave enough to eat a whole tequila worm” and who confronts a classmate who writes a note telling Sofia to “wiggle back across the border.” Sofia responds by saying, “My family didn’t cross the border; it crossed us. We’ve been here for over three hundred years, before the U.S. drew those lines.”

The novel’s end leaps ahead in time, with Sofia as an adult, a civil rights lawyer living in San Francisco, who fights to preserve her changing neighborhood and who often visits to happily participate in the traditions she questioned as a child.

The novel’s main events are closely connected to the author’s life, as she, too, was raised in McAllen and attended a prestigious boarding school before attending Harvard University. Many of Canales’s own experiences, portrayed through Sofia, would be easily recognizable to younger Latinx readers who straddle two cultures and find value in each as they come of age.

Texas Valley girl triumphs

Sophia's early years are spent with her wonderful, supportive Mexican-American family and friends in South Texas. When she has the opportunity to attend an elite boarding school on scholarship, Sophia must make a decision that will affect her future and her family. Canales combines cultural details, vivid characters, and humerous and touching situations into a realistic and involving growing-up story that transcends culture and ethnicity.
