Physics can be fun and wondrous

I wish I had Sarah to teach me physics when I was young! After spending so many years avoiding math and physics like a plague, Sarah has awakened my curiosity and even given me a glimpse of "love" for the subject after reading the book. I appreciate her creative and gentle way of guiding the readers to wonder the mystery and mechanics of the nature.

Physics isn't supposed to be this much fun to read about

Sarah Allen is unfair. People are supposed to be left brain or right brain, language and literature or math and science, but Sarah Allen cheats the system and excels at both. She has equally impressive command of the conventions of Fairy Tale storytelling and the nuts and bolts of fluid mechanics; that she's able to employ one to explain the other only compounds my jealousy. I understand more or less how words work, but physics (and science in general) always befuddled me; after this fifty-ish page story, I understand fluid mechanics much better than I did after dozens of hours in those university physics lectures I inevitably transferred out of.

The story, by itself, would be an entertaining modern fable, with a winking sense of humor that transcends the material (pay special attention to the court advisor). The instruction and explanation of the concepts, likewise, are executed perfectly and would justify a download on their own; but, as mentioned, Sarah Allen is unfair, so the two are intertwined. Miss Allen earns the often promised but rarely delivered tagline: she makes learning fun.

Cannot recommend highly enough.

Grade 5-9-In this well-organized and thorough resource, Trumble delves into the people, legends, and politics surrounding the creation and ruin of the largest library in the ancient world. The chapter on collecting books details its methods of acquisition, which ranged from payment to thievery. A section on Alexandria's competitor, Pergamum, located in Asia Minor, provides an opportunity to describe and contrast the use of parchment and papyrus. Much attention is paid to the scholars who utilized the library and their achievements. For example, Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth. Herophilus practiced dissection and probably vivisection, adding much to contemporary understanding of the function of human organs and systems. Back matter includes maps, the Ptolemy family tree, and a description of sites in ancient Alexandria. The full-color, single-page illustrations, rendered in watercolor and gouache, are uneven. Marshall is more successful at depicting the flow of fabric, architectural ornamentation, and inanimate objects than in capturing the proportions and physicality of the human body. The modern-day Bibliotheca Alexandrina, an institution inspired by its ancient predecessor, is given only a brief mention. These flaws notwithstanding, this book is a unique and timely celebration of the age-old passion for and preservation of ideas.

Gr. 5-7. It's hard to find an untouched topic in children's nonfiction, but this comes close. The library at Alexandria was the most famous in the ancient world, a center of learning, a place where much original research in astronomy, anatomy, mathematics, and science was done. Trumble begins with Alexander, who wanted to build a great city in Egypt, but died before it was finished. It was one of his successors who built the library and stocked it with a vast collection of books, some obtained through nefarious means. Succeeding chapters describe the research done at the site, the most interesting, perhaps, being the work of Herophilus, who became an expert in human anatomy by practicing vivisection in order to learn more. Some of the attractively illustrated, full-page color paintings are full of activity; others are more stilted, simply showing people in discussion. In either case, however, the art has a younger feel than the strong, interesting text. A useful support for curriculum. Ilene Cooper

An exceptionally vivid presentation

Robina MacIntyre Marshall's fine drawings lend to this outstanding survey of the Library of Alexandria - which was much more than a simple repository of books. Scholars who visited the Library dissected corpses, star-gazed, and had controversial discussions speculating about science, nature and the world. Their findings would change world knowledge. An exceptionally vivid presentation, Kelly Trumble's Library Of Alexandria would make a popular and welcome addition to both school and community library collections.

Engaging Read, Interesting Illustrations & Vignettes, Links Past to Today

As I am not a trained artist, I disagree with the other reviewer. I think the illustrations add to the imagination of the young reader and enhance their memory of the material presented in the book. For a student who "hates" history or "hates" to read, I think this is a true find! I think it is a very interesting read for a young person (upper elementary through middle school and even a low reading highschooler or for a quick read for a highschooler.) It ties together the general overview of ancient history that they should be learning and ties in interesting vignettes. Having taught middle school level ancient world history, I wish I would have had this book when I was teaching. It is a bit slanted regarding who did what destruction (Christians vs. Muslims) but a thinking reader who checks their sources' origins, fact checks and reads more than one source on an era for a balanced view (as all of us should), I think it is a fine addition to any study of the ancient world. I like how the author continually tied her information to its impact on the modern world. Included lots of "memory hooks" to help a student organize their understanding of the era in their mind.

Trumbell's 'Library of Alexandria'

This text is an excellent overview of the libraries history of contributions to the human condition. The illustrations are frequent and very lively additions to the work. I did notice two small details that don't fit with my knowledge of Greek history, but they are minor and need not be discussed here. Further, while some introductions function well for adults, this is not such an introduction; the material is really meant for adolescents, and, in this respect, it is wonderful.

Incredible Mix of Ideas, Very Little Defense for them

I originally read this book in college at the recommendation of some friends. I enjoyed it, but didn't make much of it or think about it for a few years thereafter. However, with the recent rise of shows like Ancient Aliens, and the continually developing evidence for civilizations that existed centuries prior to timeframes currently "accepted," I have been reading many more texts within this field of "pseudoscience" or "New Age" ideas.

What stands out to me about Frissell's book is how many ideas are tied together in one coherent whole. Focusing upon UFO's, multi-dimensional existence, chakra, re-birthing, martians, Atlantis and much more, this text weaves a huge mix of unaccepted/controversial/pseudoscience/conspiracy notions into a single unified theory. My biggest complaint of the text is simply the lack of evidence Frissell uses to defend his ideas, relying upon the idea that we, as readers, simply know what he is saying to be true. This is not to say there isn't some scientific evidence scattered about, but for the most part, it is as if Frissell isn't trying to prove to non-believers that he's correct. It's more that he knows what he says is true, and it might be, so he just says it matter of fact without need to say more.

For example, more and more evidence abounds about the actual history of our human society being much older than ever imagined, and Frissell claims has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. New theories surface regarding Atlantis on the regular, and Frissell neatly outlines its existence, how it functioned, and why it collapsed. Even multi-dimensional ideas are coming to exist more often as people try to understand consciousness, the soul, and near death experiences. That said, this doesn't prove Frissell correct, but it certainly makes one curious as to what we will know a hundred years from now, and whether Frissell (among many others in his field) were just 100% accurate in their current knowledge.

To me, one of the lasting pieces of value in this text were the breathing techniques he outlined in detail. I use the Christ Consciousness breathing often, as a tool for resetting myself and reconnecting with a higher power. I feel that as I utilize Yoga and breathing more often, I will certainly reference these techniques with regularity.

All in all, "Nothing in this Book is True..." at its least provides a supremely interesting way of seeing the unexplainable explained neatly and coherently, even if you choose to disregard it all as rubbish. At its most, it provides a detailed explanation of exactly how things are and have always been. Either way, it is very accessible, well-written, and certainly thought-provoking.

starts off very interesting and relevant. Then the rambling begins, and enough content contradicts modern science (to an absurd point), that sources to the author are questionable, even while keeping an open mind.
Still that are some important topics brought up (and reiterated) that coincide with a bunch of other weirdness I have experienced, so def worth a quick read.

Excellent Dictionary!

This is an excellent dictionary! While it is not exhaustive, it has had most words that I wanted to look up. Being divided between English-Creole and Creole-English it is helpful in translating words in both directions. Only negative is that I would prefer the dictionary and the font to be smaller to fit into my pocket.

For someone wanting to have a working knowledge of Creole, I recommend "Pimsleur's Haitian Creole" audio courses (30 lessons), "Haitian Creole Phrasebook: Essential Expressions for Communicating in Haiti" by Jowel C. Laguerre, and this dictionary - in that order.

After learning some Creole it is helpful to read some Creole literature to get a better feel for the language and sentence structure. For me I used a Haitian Creole translation of the Bible.

The only one in the market so far that makes it!

I've been looking for one that actually provides me with the creole translation of my English words. All comes short, very short. When I check the translation against the actual speaker its a hit or miss but this one is right on target. This is recommended for anyone who needs to communicate to a creole speaking person.

Its great if you just need to figure out a few words here and there. The only problem I had was that going from English to Creole there were sometimes 2 to 3 different words that were translated for 1 word. I wish they could have included sentences that way you know the proper way to use each word. But over all worth the $.

Some good information...but...

This book mainly deals with things that are behind the scenes of what we see with our naked eye. The title is obviously in reference to the Bible, so subject matter in the book deals with spiritual things. One can find some good information here. But I have some problems with this book. I would say 20% of this book is Bible reference verses. No, I'm not offended by that. But I already have a Bible, so this was a bit much. There also is a section that is repeated in this book. I don't know if my copy is an anomaly or not, but obviously whoever did the editing shouldn't be in that line of business anymore. My final issue with this book is blanket statements that need more evidence to support a theory laid out by the author. For example, the author states that Pres. Reagan took the oath of office from the west wing of the Capitol, facing the obelisk. The author states that Reagan was sending the illuminati a very powerful message; the message being the antichrist is soon to be revealed. It just seems like if someone wants to, they can take any normal occurence in life and turn it into some occult meaning. In my opinion its statements like this that "muddy the waters" of very real occult happenings in our world. They turn true conspiracy theorists that expose the truth behind history, and make them look like "crackpots". In my opinion, read this book, but use a lot of discernment!

This is a good book overall. At first I wasn't impressed, but as I read on I was not disappointed. This book gives some info. on the Protestant Reformation, which many Christians today seem to know very little about. This book also covers many topics including some which many consider "conspiracy theories."

While watching any famous trial on HLN, have you ever yelled at your tv with impatience, as you wondered why the trial is not like "Perry Mason?"

For many years, we have been entertained by the surprise attacks, trial by ambush and consistent wins in one hour - until social media and the tv cameras were allowed to be in the courtrooms.

Long before the trial occurs what happens to even allow the trial to take place?

"California Civil Litigation," a textbook designed to walk readers from the point in which a prospective client contacts an attorney's office through gathering material facts (facts that make a difference in the case); writing what is necessary in the right format; setting calendar dates to be heard by the judge; and, not only presenting the case but also being prepared for if there needs to be an appeal.

Many people say that they were wronged and that justice should be served, but can you put your complaint in the context of the law?

Other than applying your complaint/allegation to what the law says, it's important for attorneys and paralegals to be able to:

1. Write and fairly attack pleadings (documents that define the allegation
and remedy);
2. Create and conduct discovery (process that focuses upon the legal issues
and eliminates the trial by ambush);
3. Calendar: Every step towards your goal to win the case must be
calendared according to the rules within your state (if you are doing
state-level litigation);
4. Trial-setting: If you and the opposing party have not settled this
case,
the judge will review the issues, before setting a trial;
5. Trial: This is where all preparation and consideration come together;
6. Post-Trial: The military might call this your "after action
assessment;" and
7. Appeals: Determines whether or not the law was properly applied.

This is a great book whether you are a student, a litigant with an attorney or someone representing yourself, because there are no assumptions in this book.

And, while there are many excellent examples of pleadings and other documents, at the close of each chapter, it's important to check with the court of your state and county, to use the appropriate rules.

I especially like that although this book is written based upon California Civil litigation, the authors managed to compare the Federal Rules in each chapter, without taking away from each chapter's message.

I live in California, and I'm working on federal civil claims.

Disappointing

The organization of this text is a nightmare. Scattered throughout are examples of Judicial Council forms and attorney-prepared documents that absolutely belong in an appendix. Finding what you want to read about in a chapter supposedly dedicated to that issue requires flipping through all of this extraneous crap.

The prose is confusing, and often creates more questions than it answers; it's also very limited. Take out all of the examples of prepared forms and docs and the amount of instructional text wouldn't have qualified as a book about civil litigation.

VERY disappointed that my program has chosen this text, despite instructors' input. They don't appreciate it either.

If you are anywhere in the management chain of command of a company (all the way to CEO) and doing business in California (the most litigious state in the most litigious country) this book will give you an excellent idea of what your attorneys should and should not be doing. Because it is written for paralegals it is easy to understand and explains/defines much of the legal jargon. Unfortunately you cannot rely on county and state agencies to protect your company so you had better arm yourself with some knowledge!

This book remains an essential reference tool.

The best bit about taking delivery of the latest edition of "Guinness World Records" is the discovery of new information about the largest, tallest, fastest or whatever. As with every new edition of this book, many records from previous editions are removed in order to provide space for those which are included for the very first time. In other words, this is not an up-dated version of Guinness World Records 2006 to which a few more records have been added. This is a new book.

Every edition of Guinness World Records will always remain an excellent reference source - but you will need several editions to be certain of finding exactly what it is you require.

On the other hand, if you are simply curious about records, there are many in this particular edition that were never intended. Whilst it might be every Athlete's intention to break the world record in his or her particular discipline, it was never intended that a certain person would have an entry in this book because their's was the skull from which the largest ever object was removed. Gruesome? No, not at all. Fascinating? Yes, most definitely.

The Biggest, Smallest, Fastest, And Slowest

"Guinness World Records 2007" is the annual reference to extremes in any aspect of life. Whether you are interested in The World's Longest Wheelchair Basketball Game (26 hours, 3 minutes at the University of Nebraska-Omaha) or the Fish With the Most Eyes (the six-eyed spookfish, Bathylychnops exilis,) this book has most any superlative you could ever want to know packaged in a single, glossy book.

Of course, most of this information is utterly pointless, but if you find yourself needing to know that the fastest time to peel and eat a lemon is 46.53 seconds (by Robert Mark Burns of London, England,) this is the book with the information you need.

Holds the record for the most read bathroom book...at my house anyway.

I bought this book for my husband. He absolutely loves being a fountain of useless information and Guinness World Records is his favorite source of material. He doesn't like the hardback versions even though they usually have better quality pictures and more of them. He prefers the paperback, claiming it has more info. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but the real reason is because it's easier to read when he's on the throne. Yep, this is his preferred bathroom reading material. Lol. Anyway, he loves to be able to answer off the wall questions and quote miscellaneous facts that he learns from Guinness. It's got everything from the tallest man to the highest mountain. He finds it all fascinating and loves this book. The paperback versions are usually harder to find current editions of, so we were glad to be able to purchase this the same year it was released.
