Major General Edward Braddock (1694-1755) A veteran of the Coldstream Guards and former governor of Gibraltar, Major General Edward Braddock was given command of a small expeditionary force sent to North America to remove the French from the continent. His immediate goal-to dislodge them from Ohio River Valley. His force, consisting of the veterans of two regular regiments of foot plus numerous colonial units, was met on the path seven miles from Fort Duquesne by a small French and Indian army and was soundly defeated. Braddock, severely wounded, died a few days later. George Washington (1732-1799) Faced with the prospect of being demoted to captain, George Washington had resigned his commission in the Virginia forces in October, 1754 and focused his attention on organizing his new estate at Mount Vernon. On March 2, 1755, he received a letter from Braddock's loyal aide-de-camp, Captain Robert Orme inviting him to join the general's "Family" as an aide. Washington jumped at this second chance to pursue his goal of a military career. The young aide, eager to learn, kept his own personal copy of Braddock's daily orders to the army, known as his "Orderly Book." Braddock's Orderly Books Washington's copies of General Braddock's Orderly Books were originally published in 1878 as an appendix to William H. Lowdermilk's History of Cumberland (Maryland). Lowdermilk's edition, however, contained numerous errors, with entire pages of the manuscript inserted in the wrong location. The originals, along with most of George Washington's papers, are held by the Library of Congress and have now been made readily available for viewing on the American Memory pages of their website. This edition reprints Lowdermilk's original. However, a close comparison has been made to the originals and the appropriate corrections have now been made. Selected Correspondence of George Washington Part II of this work contains the correspondence of George Washington related to the Ohio Expedition of 1755. Included are his accounts of the Battle of Monongahela sent to Lieutenant Governor Robert Dinwiddie, his mother Mary Ball Washington, and his younger brother John Augustine Washington. Washington's letter book of this time contains memorandums that he inserted later. This edition publishes those memorandums as Washington originally wrote them. Appendices The British casualty list from the Battle of Monongahela as originally published in Lowdermilk. In addition, as with all Normal Warfare Publications, this work contains an extensive appendix with biographical information on all the major participants mentioned within the work.

Once past "hello, world!" most beginners go through a long period of monkey-see-monkey-do learning to cobble together a collection of phrases that seem to work, although you're never exactly sure why. Eventually you run up against problems that you can't find a good example for and you have to do the hard work of understanding exactly what it is that you have asked your code to do. This is the beginning of the real learning.

One of the terms that floats around is the mysterious "decorator" that never seems urgent enough to look into, although they turn out to be quite useful. If you have been meaning get around to looking into this, the Guide to Learning Python Decorators is the place to start. But that's actually not the compelling reason for most Python newcomers to pick up this book.

A common source of beginner confusion is the "scope" of variables in functions: "I've written this function and it takes some values as input and derives a result through multiple steps. I can get the final result, but not all the intermediate variables that I've set. What gives?" This and similar questions arise from confusion as to when names are available within a function definition and when they are available to other functions and statements. It's sort of like trying to understand a language without knowing the difference between the present tense ("I am") and the past tense ("I was").

This book will clear up your confusions about functions even before you start to read about decoration at all. In addition to getting straight about scope, you'll finally get clarity about the difference between arguments and parameters, positional parameters, named parameters, etc. The author concedes that this introductory material is something that some readers will find "pedantic," but reports that many people find it helpful. He's being too modest. The distinctions he draws are essential to moving your programming skills beyond doing a pretty good imitation to real fluency.

Nice introduction, no advanced material

A clear and concise book. The author clearly explains the issue, bottom up: python functions, arguments, parameters, closures and finally decorators. The english is clear, so it's easy to understand the concept.
However, for a price of a full book, you could expect some advanced material: more about multiple decorators (which are only reminded in one page at the end), exceptions, detailed examples of common usage, class decorators etc.

Level-up your python skills

This is a concise guide that covers all the necessary background in order to understand decorators.

Although many python programmers use decorators in their code, very few know how to write a decorator. Writing a decorator is considered an advanced skill and this book does an excellent job of demystifying it.

The book has dedicated sections to cover nested functions, variable function parameters, the * operator (*args, **kwargs) and closures, which are all advanced concepts that lead up to decorators.

This books serves as a stand-alone manual to python decorators. I'd highly recommend it for beginners and experts who are trying to level-up their python chops.

Beautifully written but

Beautifully written but, for this reader, ultimately unsatisfying, look at a black girl's years at a prestigious prep school in New Hampshire. Lorene Cary leaves a middle class life in Philadelphia in her HS sophomore year to attend St. Paul High School, circa 1972. While she feels some degree of "other-ness" she becomes amazingly assimilated into this world of prestige and money. She arrives wanting to "turn it out!" and, in the end, graduates with a respectable (if not stellar) academic career and winning the prestigious "Rector's Award." Along the way, she loses her virginity (in a most unromantic way), is challenged to study harder and learn more than she ever thought possible (Calculus remains her nemesis), deals with plebian summer jobs back in Phily. This reader was never sure if she "liked" St Paul's, or not. Her subsequent career brought her back to teach there and with all the detail she devotes to the various traditions, it would seem that she does. Leaving one to wonder: Did she sell out? Did she "drink the kool aid"? If so, is this okay? This reader was left wanting more and feeling somewhat cheated of the "real" story.

Good Subject for a Memoir, but Fails to Explore Deep Enough

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I had heard Lorene Cary speak at a conference, and she was incredibly inspiring. The way she spoke, she sounded like an amazing writer, and so I was excited to pick up this book, the first work by Cary that I have had a chance to read. It simply did not live up to my expectations.

Cary does do some great things with language in this memoir. Many descriptions are beautifully poetic, and the metaphor of black ice is one that will stick with me. But there were also many flaws in this book, the greatest being that I feel as though she did not do enough to let the reader in. Perhaps I expect more from memoirs, but one of the reasons I enjoy reading them so much is for the insights writers share when they look back on the experiences they choose to write about. Memoir can allow for great intimacy between writer and reader, and Cary just does not do that here. Perhaps distancing herself was intentional, but it was not a tactic that worked for me. She does a good job describing the black female experience in a world that was previously all-white, all-male, but I feel like she could have gone deeper, as far as how she personally felt about the particular aspects of her life that she chose to share. Coming-of-age stories are ones I naturally gravitate to, as there is so much emotion to explore in that adolescent experience, and in my opinion, Cary only skimmed the surface. She couldn't break through the black ice the book is named for, so the experiences she writes about seem a bit watered-down.

I also had a hard time keeping track of some of the characters. Many of her schoolmates in particular appeared so fleetingly, and weren't developed enough, so that I found myself paging backwards to remind myself who some of them were. Her family members were a bit more memorable, and I thought the stories about her grandparents were particularly of interest, but I would have liked to have known even more about her relationships with them. There were just too many missed opportunities, and so while this book is a quick read, and is valuable for the perspective of a young black female that Cary shares with us, in the end I can only rate this book as average.
